Bajaj Auto has announced to phase out two of its bikes; Boxer BM 150 and Platina 125 from market due to poor demand. The company launched the Boxer 150 last year at Rs. 43,000, which is the cheapest 150 cc bike and was aimed to target rural India. The bike was tagged as ‘Bharat Bike’ due to its rugged built, simple styling, best in class mileage and high performance. However, the bike failed to attract the target group, hence the company decided to phase out the bike from the domestic market. So as the Platina 125, failed to attract buyers and was facing tough competition by none other than its sibling Bajaj Discover 125.
K Srinivas, president - motorcycle business, Bajaj Auto has made this announcement and said, “We produced 8,000 units of the Bajaj Boxer 150 last month and all of it was for the export market. We are discontinuing model in the domestic market”. Similarly the Platina 125 is also phased out from the local market, said Srinivas, though it is available for the exports. The Bajaj Platina 100, the cheapest bike from the company, is still selling about 50,000 units a month.
Meanwhile, the company also said that it is hoping a jump in the upcoming festive season, where it is targeting a growth of 10 per cent in sales. The company also indicates that they are not going to increase prices of their products anytime soon unlike the competition. There are also rumours for a new 100cc bike from the manufacturer and it is expected that this time Bajaj will focus on technology rather than price tag.
