All these used bikes sip slowly from their fuel tank and make each drop count
Most commuters are always looking to try and save as much money as they can by going for the most fuel-efficient options out there. But why not save yourself a whole lot more cash by checking out the pre-owned marketplace too? There are some great options if you hunt carefully, and here are some of the best:
Hero Splendor Plus
When you think of commuters, you think of the Splendor, that’s just a fact. This trusty workhorse has been around for longer than the author writing this piece, meaning the used marketplace has a host of different options. The more cared for units with lower odometer readings will set you back by around Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000, but if you’re willing to go for something slightly older with a few more miles on it, you can pick up one in decent nick for as low as Rs 15,000.
These bikes sure can take a beating, so there’s no reason to be scared away by a large odometer reading. Ideally, a budget of around Rs 25,000 should buy you a peach. In comparison, a brand new Splendor Plus BS6 will set you back by Rs 60,000 to Rs 64,000, so the potential savings are quite massive.
Bajaj Discover 100
Though no longer on sale, the Bajaj Discover 100 was a very frugal option back in its day. It’s a pity they don’t make these anymore, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still buy one. There are quite a few options to choose from, but the Discover was also available in 110cc, 125cc, 135cc and 150cc variants so be careful when searching. A 100cc Disco in good condition will cost you around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 today, with slightly more well-worn units available for around Rs 15,000. Its last known ex-showroom price was a touch under Rs 50,000.
TVS Star City Plus
A slightly more premium commuter offering comes in the form of the TVS Star City Plus. Despite sporting a larger 110cc engine compared to the earlier bikes in this list, it still manages to sip away gingerly and eke out the extra kilometres from each litre. These haven’t sold in as huge numbers as something like the Splendor, so they’re slightly harder to come by, and you’ll have to shell out Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 for a well-maintained bike. A new one costs Rs 64,000 ex-showroom, so you’ll still be saving quite a lot.
Hero Passion Pro
The Passion Pro is Hero’s effort at a slightly more premium 100cc commuter. While there is a 110cc variant available, which has just received a BS6 update, the model we’re talking about is the erstwhile Passion Pro i3S powered by the same 97.2cc sloper engine as the Splendor. It looks fancier, gets more features, and even offers the option of a front disc brake. The well cared for examples are listed at around Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000, making them considerably more affordable than the last known new price of Rs 51,000 to Rs 56,000.
Bajaj CT100
The final option on this list is the brutally simple Bajaj CT100. Its spartan approach means there isn’t much that can go wrong on it, and the 100cc motor makes the most out of every drop of fuel. There aren’t too many people willing to let go of these babies, so you’ll have to hunt around for a good deal. A recent electric start model (2017-2019) in good condition will cost you around Rs 40,000 to Rs 45,000 compared to the current BS6 price of Rs 49,000 (ex-showroom Delhi). Bear in mind, the on-road price for a new bike will go up to nearly Rs 60,000, so the savings on a used bike are still quite sizeable.
