Who thought a combination of challans, electricity bills and helmets can be a funny affair?
Surveillance cameras are always a touchy subject for everyone and now it seems like even government departments share the sentiment on some level. The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) in Kerala installed AI surveillance cameras a few months back to divided opinions among the people. The cameras have now landed the MVD into a pi$$ing contest with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
So, what happened is that a KSEB jeep in Wayanad was issued a challan of Rs 20,000 by an AI camera for carrying a pole on the jeep’s roof. Then, the KSEB cut the power supply to the Kalpatta Enforcement Road Transport Office (RTO) in Wayanad (which operated the said AI camera)! Turns out, technically, it was for non-payment of a Rs 11,000 electricity bill that was outstanding since May 24. The power supply was soon restored after the RTO completed the payment. Okay…..interesting.
But the KSEB was not done there as it also disconnected the power supply of the Mattannur Enforcement RTO in Kannur district and the Kasargod Enforcement RTO for an outstanding bill of Rs 52,000 and Rs 23,000 respectively. True, the KSEB were simply doing their job. But, it also sounds like sh!t just got real personal for someone in the fight.
And the recent incident in this hilarious tit-for-tat between the two departments is that a few days ago, the MVD stopped on-duty KSEB workers on the road and fined them for not wearing helmets while riding. Technically, they WERE wearing headgear but they were actually the yellow industrial safety helmets the workers use while working. Like putting vegan patties inside two buns and trying to sell them as alternatives to hamburgers. They are not the same.
The thing is, whenever something like a government department or an organization comes to mind, we tend to think of them as inanimate entities. But, they comprise of human beings doing their jobs. And we human beings are fully capable of being hilarious at our own expense. We hope the situation between the KSEB and the MVD is resolved soon, but it cracked us up for sure during the process!
