Cruisers, streetfighters and even electrics
The Yamaha FZ remains one of the Japanese brand’s most popular models in India, and why wouldn’t it be? For under Rs 1 lakh (Rs 99,700, ex-showroom Delhi), you get a butch and muscular motorcycle with a super-refined yet reasonably punchy motor, wrapped into a feature-rich package with bulletproof reliability. The FZ-Fi, as it’s now called, is in its third generation and also adheres to BS6 emission norms. But if it’s not quite your cup of tea, here’s everything else can you get for a similar price:
Bajaj Avenger Street 160
The FZ is great at the urban commute but it isn’t necessarily the ideal motorcycle for long-distance highway mile-munching. For those endless hours in the saddle, nothing beats a cruiser’s armchair-like riding position. So if you’re looking to go cross country, we’d recommend shelling out Rs 94,893 and getting yourself a Bajaj Avenger Street 160 instead.
TVS Apache RTR 160 4V
While it’s certainly no slouch, the FZ isn’t quite the king of the mountain when it comes to power figures in this segment. If you’d like a little more oomph than the Yamaha’s 12.4PS, a safe bet is the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V with its 159.7cc motor churning out a healthy 16.02PS. It’s a sharp handler too and can be all yours for Rs 1,02,950 (rear drum) or Rs 1,06,000 (rear disc).
Bajaj Pulsar NS160
If even 16PS doesn’t quite cut it for you, then you’re going to have to go for the most powerful bike in this segment. That mantle lies with the Bajaj Pulsar NS160. Thanks to its advanced liquid-cooled engine, it manages 17.2PS and 14.6Nm, and you’ll seldom find yourself wishing for more grunt in the urban environment. Ride one home for Rs 1,05,901.
Honda Unicorn
Of course, outright power isn’t everything. A trustworthy badge on the tank is far more important to a lot of buyers, and what logo is more trustworthy than the mighty wing of Honda. And there are few more dependable models in Honda’s lineup than the Unicorn. Now powered by a 160cc heart once more, it’s BS6-compliant and will cost you Rs 93,593, making it the most affordable vehicle on this list.
Bajaj Chetak
Time never stands still, and with every passing day, we move closer to electrification. One very capable electric two-wheeler option in this price range is the much-spoken-about Bajaj Chetak. It might not be fit for cross-country duties, but if all you need is something to ferry you to the office and back every day, the Urbane variant of the Chetak presents an eco-friendly option at just Rs 1,00,000.
