Versys 650 Expert Review

BikeDekho Experts

Overview

Earlier this year, Kawasaki India had launched its 1000cc motorcycle Versys 1000 which received a lot of admiration by the speed freaks of the country. To expand the Versys model line-up, Kawasaki has decided to launch its younger sibling Versys 650 in India. Kawasaki Versys 650 also known as the KLE650 is a middleweight machine.

Versys 650 gets its revs from the same 649cc, DOHC, 8-valves, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke Parallel Twin engine that also propels two more Kwacker machines- Ninja 650 and ER-6n. The mill has been retuned for better power delivery and more torque in low & mid-revs. The engine comes mated to a six-speed with positive neutral finder transmission that is capable enough to develop 68bhp of power along with a peak torque of 64Nm. The fuel injected mill has a compression ratio of 10.8:1 and a power oriented bore x stroke ratio of 83.0 mm x 60.0 mm.

Talking about the look, Versys 650 borrows the design style from its elder sibling, Versys 1000. The front profile of the bike features dual headlamps and adjustable front windscreen that protect the rider from the wind blast at high speed. The twin rear view mirrors are fitted on the clip-on handlebars impressively. Furthermore, it has been equipped with a sharply crafted fuel tank of 21 liters that ensures long distance ride without any halt. Approaching towards the rear, the bike has body colored rear grab rail for the safety of the pillion. It sports an LED tail lamp and the clear lens turn indicators are fitted on the rear fender along with number plate holder.

Bolted on a Diamond type high-tensile steel frame, Versys 650 has an overall body dimension of 2165 mm in length, 840 mm in width, 1400 mm in height along with a wheelbase of 1415 mm. A minimum ground clearance of 170 mm ensures an agile yet smooth handling around the corners. The bike runs on 120/70ZR17M/C front and 160/60ZR17M/C rear tubeless tyres. The motorcycle is fitted with a 300mm dual semi-floating petal disc brake at the front and 250mm single petal disc brake at the rear. It employs 41 mm inverted telescopic fork at the front and mono shock with remotely adjustable spring at the rear.

    Highway Cruiser
Owned Versys 650 2019 model and clocked 14,000 km on it before selling it in 2021. Versys 650 is a fuzz bike and is easy to maintain in long run. Extremely comfortable bike to ride on, did close to 1000 km in a day with zero fatigue and back pain thanks to the very upright seating position and wide seat. The windshield does a good job at highway cruising speed, 2019 model makes around 69 bhp which is adequate for Indian roads. You also got the Versys rider community ready to help you with anything life throws at you, made very good friends from the group. Coming to why I sold it, Versys 650 felt very much top-heavy, and managing traffic or u-turns are always a pain, if you have a pillion then it's more trouble. Some may call it an adventure bike but it will be safe to ride on tarmac only with very mild broken roads. Stock tires (Dunlop) are pathetic and give zero confidence in wet roads or gravel. The bike comes with dual-channel ABS and no other electronics and the instrument cluster is very basic (we are talking about the 2019 model here, the 2022 model comes with traction control and a TFT screen). The main reason to sell Versys was the love for the in-line four engines and its sweet sound. 17” front and rear tire size make the bike very stable on highways and on corners so definitely consider it if you’re riding primarily on the tarmac. Said that the 2022 Versys 650 is a solid bike with a trouble-free engine, all required power for our road condition, comfortable riding position, much need modern electronics, and a new design.
