Overview

Since inception, Bajaj Discover has succeeded well in the Indian market by being a stylish yet performance packed commuter. Bajaj has now put its efficient player in the 100cc line-up. Cutting down on power, the new Discover 100 was launched to provide a better fuel economy along with that Discover signature style.

The bike is energized by a 94.38cc DTS-i, single-cylinder, four-stroke, air cooled engine which comes mated to a four-speed gearbox. The maximum power of the machine now comes down to 7.7Ps at 7500rpm while creating a maximum torque of 7.85Nm at 5000rpm. Apart from its reliable engine, the bike features a digital CDI with an 8 bit microprocessor chip which helps to provide optimum ignition timing for any given engine rpm.

Unlike, the SNS (spring in spring) suspension employed in the first variant, the new Bajaj Discover 100 comes with gas-filled nitrox dual shock absorbers at the rear. The front suspension remains to telescopic ones. The new avatar of Discover comes with a low maintenance battery, which is a definite pro for the common mass of the nation. The new LED tail lamps at the rear are one of the major modifications made. The instrument cluster also gets a fine finishing and a low battery indicator is now added to the set. The refreshed body graphics and an improved headlamp further adds to the visuals of this bike. Twin pilot lamps remain in existence with a DC headlight to ensure a steady light beam even in lower rpm conditions.

A pass-switch is now added to provide a safer riding experience. An Auto Choke is incorporated for easy starting in the chilly weather conditions. The front and rear brakes are drum type with 130mm and 110mm dimensions respectively with tyre size of 2.75x17” at the front and 3.00x17” at the rear end. The company claims a mileage of 91kmpl making it stand at the doorstep of other fuel saving nerds like TVS Star City and Mahindra Centuro.

Design

Bajaj Discover is the oldest model of its series, which came into existence back in 2003. However, it still looks bold and classy with its curvy headlight unit with tinted visor, large fuel tank and LED tail lamp section. The machine is designed with a practical approach and results to be one of the brilliant commuters available in the market. It is crafted for long commutes, therefore, comfort offering of the motorcycle is quite high. It comes along with a long seat that can easily accommodate two persons.

Built on a single down tube chassis, the machine is highly durable and reliable. The manufacturer has equipped it with telescopic forks at the front and nitrox twin shock absorbers at the rear. The rigid and strong frame maneuvers on 2.75 X 17" front and 3.00 X 17" rear unidirectional tyres. Besides wrapping all black 5-spoke alloy wheels, the tyres are also fitted with 130mm drum brake at the front and 110mm drum brake at the rear. The dimensions of the motorcycle are pretty soothing as riders of different height can easily have its riding pleasure. The measurements of the bike are as follows: 2040mm x 760mm x 1087mm (l x w x h). Enhancing the rider’s confidence at the corners is the 1305mm long wheelsbase of the machine. For making it a true commuter for Indian roads, the manufacturer has drawn a minimum ground clearance of 162mm. Rider will feel no pain or stress while riding this two-wheeler as its kerb weight is just 115kg.

Although, the model is a decade old but it still sports twin pilot lamps at the headlamp. The instrumentation of the machine needs to an update as there is a fully analog cluster with speedometer, fuel gauge, odometer and trip meter. The colors in which the motorcycle is offered in the country are Black Green, Flame Red, Midnight Black & Blue and Midnight Black & Red. The front fender comes in body color, which matches the serenity of the motorbike.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

Bajaj Discover incorporates a 94.38cc, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled, 2-valve engine that comes mated to a 4-speed constant mesh gearbox. Performing an all down gear shift pattern, the gearbox is linked to a wet multiplate clutch. The engine is configured to make a maximum power output of 7.6bhp at 7,500rpm which comes out simultaneously with a peak torque of 7.85Nm at 5000rpm. If compared to its competitors, it has an incompetent power delivery but it feels fine when it claims a mileage of around 90kmpl. The fuel tank capacity of the motorcycle is 8 liter.

Handling & Ride Quality

Bajaj Discover comes equipped with drum brakes at both the wheels which acts fine and stops the vehicle in time. However, a front disc brake could have been better companion for the ride. The handling of the machine is fine with the healthy riding position drawn with the upright handlebars. The lightweight of the motorcycle and genuine body measurements also aids the riding experience. Though, the narrow tyres need a change.

Features

A healthy fuel tank capacity with appreciable mileage never gives a halt to the journey. The headlight is bright enough to illuminate the darkest streets. Being a commuter, it does not have any high tech security feature, which also keeps its price low and affordable.
