2019 BMW S 1000 RR Launched In India

Looks better, makes more power, gets better electronics and most importantly, is priced the same as before

The BMW S 1000 RR will be available in three variants.  Standard, Pro and Pro M Sport are priced at Rs 18.5 lakh, Rs 20.95 lakh and Rs 22.95 lakh respectively. Produces 207PS of power, 8PS more than its predecessor. Gets an all-new design language along with a host of features and electronic rider aids.

BMW Motorrad has launched the much-awaited 2019 S 1000 RR in India today. It’s offered in three variants - Standard, Pro and the top-spec Pro M Sport, priced at Rs 18.5 lakh, Rs 20.95 lakh and Rs 22.95 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) respectively. Both the Standard and Pro variant of the S 1000 RR receive a minor price bump of Rs 45,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively, while the Pro M Sport is an all-new variant. In terms of colours, the standard and Pro model will be available in a red paint scheme, while the Pro M Sport adorns the HP Motorsport racing colours.

The S 1000 RR gets an all-new design, which strays away from the brand’s asymmetrical styling, and an extensive list of features and electronic rider aids. It comes with an LED headlight with LED DRLs, a Bluetooth-enabled 6.5-inch TFT colour screen and a unique tail light that’s integrated into the turn indicators. Additionally, the bike comes with BMW’s ShiftCam technology, the company’s lingo for Variable Valve Timing that offers better low-end grunt without compromising on top end performance. 

Powering the bike is a 999cc inline four-cylinder motor that has been tuned to produce 207PS at 8,500rpm (up by 8PS) and 113Nm of torque at 11,000rpm (500 revs higher). It gets a 6-speed transmission with a bi-directional quick-shifter.

Moreover, the engine uses a number of lightweight running components which leads to a weight loss of 4kg. Overall, the S 1000 RR sheds 11kg (197kg) compared the outgoing model thanks to a redesigned chassis and a WSBK-inspired aluminium swingarm. On the other hand, Pro M Sport variant weighs just 193.5kg thanks BMW's “M Package” which comprises of lightweight carbon wheels, M lightweight battery, M Chassis kit with ride height adjustment and a pivot for the swingarm.

To put a leash on the improved motor, BMW has equipped the S 1000 RR with a raft of electronic rider aids. This includes a 6-axis IMU, cornering ABS, disengageable race ABS, dynamic traction control (DTC), hill start assist and four riding modes: Road, Rain, Dynamic & Race, all as standard. 

This can be dialled up a notch with the Pro and “M package” which adds launch control, wheelie control, slide control, a pitlane limiter, cruise control, Hill Start Control Pro and additional riding modes (Race Pro 1-3). It also lets you fine-tune each of these settings to suit your needs. Aside from this, the company also throws in a tyre pressure control unit, heated grips and a colour-coded rear seat cover. 

In terms of underpinnings, the 2019 S 1000 RR employs 45mm upside-down forks and a monoshock, both fully adjustable. Twin 320mm discs paired with radially mounted four-piston calipers and a 220mm rear disc brake provides anchorage. Its 17” alloy wheels come wrapped in 120/70-section front and 190/55-section rear tyres. 

Once launched, The 2019 S 1000 RR will compete against the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R (Rs 13.99 lakh), Honda CBR1000RR (Rs 16.84 lakh), Suzuki GSX-R1000R (Rs 19.81 lakh), Yamaha YZF-R1 (Rs 20.39 lakh) and the Ducati Panigale V4 priced at Rs 22.70 lakh.
