Royal Enfield Classic 650

The Classic is one of the most popular and iconic motorcycle models in the Royal Enfield lineup and now it comes with the tried-and-tested 650cc twin-cylinder engine.  The twin-cylinder engine is smooth and has a linear power curve which makes the Classic 650 an enjoyable motorcycle to ride.

The Classic 650 shares its chassis with the Shotgun and the Super Meteor; what sets it apart is its distinct styling. The Classic 650 gets a round LED headlight which makes it look similar to its younger sibling, the Classic 350. The rear section gets a long fender flowing over the wheel which does look very nice and adds to the classic appeal. The Classic 650's overall build quality, fit, and finish is premium.

The Royal Enfield Classic 650 is powered by the same  648-cc, air-cooled, SOHC, four-valve motor that puts out 47PS at 7,250rpm and a peak torque of 52.3Nm at 5,650rpm as the Super Meteor 650. The sprocket size has not changed but the gearing is slightly because of the 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel setup. The power delivery is linear from the 650cc mill with a good low-end grunt which is followed by a strong mid-range where the bike feels in its element. The clutch action is slightly heavy but the gearbox is slick.

The engine is tractable as it can easily do 60kmph in the sixth gear and can quickly get up to triple-digit speeds. The Classic 650 can cruise at 120kmph on the highway effortlessly with very few vibes which creep in if the motor is being pushed to the redline.

When it comes to handling, the Classic 650 does take some effort to be tipped into a corner but does a rather good job despite having a long wheelbase. The bike is extremely planted because of its heavy 243kg kerb weight. The weight is not much noticeable when the bike is moving, but you will feel it while taking U-turns and moving it around the parking lot. The bike gets MRF tyres that have been specifically developed and offer good levels of grip. The braking feedback is also sharp and stops the behemoth quickly when necessary. 

Royal Enfield mentions that the suspension setup has been slightly tuned compared to the Shotgun 650 but it still is on the stiffer side which might be a little too stiff for Indian roads.

The Classic 650 is a comfortable motorcycle to ride. The foot pegs are forward set in classic fashion, while the handlebar is wide, keeping a rider in a commanding and upright position. The seat, too, is quite comfortable, even over longer durations. 

The Classic 650 lacks in terms of features as it gets the same dash as the Classic 350 which is an analog speedometer with a digital inset. For the rider’s convenience, it does come with a USB charging port. Both clutch and the brake levers are adjustable units which the rider can adjust according to one’s own preference. The bike comes with a split-seat setup and the pillion seat can be detached for a sleeker look.

The Classic has been one of the most popular models in the Royal Enfield lineup throughout their history in India and enthusiasts have been waiting for this for a more powerful version of it for a long time. It is a fun motorcycle and a worthy successor to the Classic 500.
