2021 Triumph Speed Twin Unveiled: More Powerful And Better Equipped

Modified On Jun 1, 2021 04:30 PM By Praveen M. for Triumph Speed Twin

The Euro 5/BS6 iteration could be launched in India in September

The Triumph Speed Twin is 3PS more powerful but makes the same amount of torque as before. It gets a new front suspension, Brembo brakes, new tyres and wheels. Expected pricing around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) in India.

Triumph has unveiled the 2021 Triumph Speed Twin globally. The Euro 5/BS6 compliant iteration isn’t just cleaner but also has a few tricks up its sleeve, making it an even more alluring proposition than before. The Speed Twin was launched in India in 2019 for Rs 9.46 lakh, but expect the 2021 model to retail at around Rs 10 lakh (both ex-showroom India) when it’s launched possibly around September this year. It will be available in three new colour schemes: Red Hopper, Matt Storm Grey (with a yellow accent), and Jet Black.

For 2021, the 1200cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine has been tweaked to result in a 17 percent reduction in inertia. Triumph claims the motor offers better mid-range power and torque. It makes 100PS at 7250rpm, making it more powerful by 3PS. The peak torque remains the same, at 112Nm, but arrives at 4250rpm, instead of 4950rpm. The motor is mated to a 6-speed transmission with an assist-and-slipper clutch. Updated Road, Rain, and Sport riding modes, along with switchable traction control, help keep the rubber side down.

The 2021 Triumph Speed Twin also sees updates in the underpinnings department. The front suspension has been upgraded to Marzocchi inverted fork with cartridge damping, whereas the rear comes with a pair of preload-adjustable shock absorbers. Braking hardware has been upgraded from Brembo axial calipers to Brembo M50 radial ones, grabbing the twin 320mm discs. The rear continues with the same Nissin 2-piston caliper, with a 220mm disc. Of course, dual-channel ABS is standard. Rounding off the handling package are the new 17-inch cast-aluminium wheels wrapped with premium Metzeler Racetec RR tyres.

Visually, the motorcycle looks more or less similar to its predecessor, except for the upswept exhaust system which now gets a brushed metal finish with a matte black end cap. Keeping the geeks happy, Triumph has equipped the bike with an engine immobiliser, a halogen headlamp with LED DRLs, and an all-LED lighting system, twin-pod instrument cluster with a digital inset, and a USB charging socket under the seat. We wish Triumph had made the socket more accessible by positioning it somewhere near the handlebar.

All in all, Triumph has given the 2021 Speed Twin a healthy dose of update, which should help it compete better with its arch-nemesis, the BMW R 1250 R. Another mild off-road-friendly alternative would be the Ducati Scrambler 1100
