2021 Yamaha MT-09 vs 2019 MT-09: Image Comparison

Yamaha has taken the wraps off the 2021 MT-09 for the global market. It’s been updated with a larger engine, lighter components, and better features compared to the previous-gen model. The first update you’ll notice on the 2021 MT-09 is the new bifunctional projector headlight flanked by LED DRLs. While it looks different, we still prefer the older design which looked a lot more menacing. 

The LED tail light too has been redesigned to project a Y-shape illumination.

Even the shape of the fuel tank and the seat have been revised for better feel and feedback on the new MT.

The updated MT-09 comes with a 3.5-inch full-colour TFT console which displays a host of information including clock, gearshift indicator, and water/air temperature. 

Saving some weight are the new 10-spoke forged wheels which are 700g lighter than before.

The biggest change on the 2021 MT comes with the larger 889cc inline three-cylinder DOHC liquid-cooled EU5-compliant engine. More displacement means more power! The new MT-09 makes 119PS at 10,000rpm, which is 4PS more than before, and 93Nm at 7,000rpm, 5.5Nm more at 1500rpm lower down the rev range. 

It even gets a bi-directional quickshifter for clutchless up and down shifts along with a slip and assist clutch.

The new MT-09 isn’t short on electronic rider aids either. It features a 6-axis IMU with lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, wheelie and brake control along with switchable rider modes.

Yamaha has managed to shed 4kg of weight (189kg kerb) on the 2021 MT-09, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 629PS/ton. It pulls this off with an all-new die-cast aluminium Deltabox chassis and a swingarm that weighs 2.3kg less. Same goes for the die-cast aluminium subframe which saves an additional 1.5kg.

While both bikes come with a fully adjustable suspension setup, the units on the 2021 model are sourced from KYB.

The radially mounted callipers clamping onto dual 298mm front discs are now from Nissin. Same goes for the 245mm rear disc. The dimensions of the discs though remain unchanged.

The previous-gen MT-09 retailed at Rs 10,64,615 (ex-showroom). Expect the 2021 model to command a heft premium over the older bike considering the catalogue of changes.
