2022 Yamaha MT-15: India Launch Likely In April?

Modified On Mar 17, 2022 09:00 AM By Manaal Mahatme for Yamaha MT-15

Dip in sales, leaked type-approval documents, and now a dealer event… it is about time Yamaha spills the beans

[UPDATE: Yamaha has launched the MT-15 Version 2.0 in India. From pricing to specs and features, check out the details in our launch story]

The leaked invite of the Yamaha dealer event hints at the possibility of the debut of the 2022 MT-15 next month. While there is no official word on the updated Japanese naked’s launch, here’s why we think it won’t be long before the new MT-15 debuts:

Production And Sales Slump
The Yamaha MT-15 has been consistently selling well despite the relatively high asking price. However, in the last few months, its production, and consequently, sales have dipped to the point where Yamaha manufactured 80 but sold just 17 units of the MT-15. Now this leads to the possibility that Yamaha might just be working on a new iteration of the naked.

Leaked Type-approval Documents
Last year, we broke the news of Yamaha getting approval for a dual-channel ABS system for the MT-15. This was followed by another exclusive news of the bike getting a Bluetooth connectivity module. Now, given that these techs have already received the transport department’s approval, it is about time that it hits production.

The debut of the Yamaha YZF-R15 V4 with the USD fork means that the possibility of its naked sibling getting the same equipment cannot be ruled out. But does that mean the new MT-15 will also get the traction control and quickshifter from the R15? We hope so. Since the Yamaha FZ series also has Bluetooth connectivity, we think the new MT-15 will feature the same.

With the aforementioned updates and a few cosmetic changes, the 2022 Yamaha MT-15 will demand a few thousand rupees over its current price of Rs 1.46 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The Yamaha dealer event is scheduled for April 11, and we reckon that the company will be briefing its dealer partners about the 2022 MT-15 that day, and an official launch will follow later in the same month.
