The Benelli TRK 251 is the latest entrant in India's competitive sub-400cc ADV segment, locking horns with the likes of the Royal Enfield Himalayan and the KTM 250 Adventure. Despite being the heaviest of the lot, the Himalayan triumphs in acceleration from 0-60kmph, thanks to its oodles of performance available in the bottom-end. However, the KTM’s high-strung motor beats the RE in the 0-100kmph sprint. The Benelli TRK 251 engine puts out performance similar to a 200cc motor, and it is evident from its acceleration numbers.

The Himalayan’s long-stroke engine wins over its rivals here too. In fact, in the 40-80kmph run, it beats the other two by a considerable margin. With most of its torque concentrated in the bottom-end of the rev range, the RE picks up pace much quicker than the other two.

The KTM’s bigger front disc and well-calibrated ABS system give it the edge here. On the other side of the spectrum is the Benelli’s braking hardware. Interestingly, despite having the smallest disc and an intrusive ABS unit, the TRK manages to outshine the Himalayan, whose weight advantage didn’t help in braking.

The Benelli TRK 251 doesn’t impress in this department too. However, thanks to its segment-biggest 18-litre fuel tank, the TRK 251 should give you 611km on a tankful, suitable for long-distance touring. However, the Himalayan’s excellent economy results in a 600km range, despite its 15-litre tank.
The Benelli TRK 251 is a fresh alternative to the Himalayan and the 250 Adventure. However, going by the numbers, it doesn’t cut it, especially with the extra premium it demands over its competition.
