The Harley-Davidson Pan America is the cult bike maker’s first adventure motorcycle. It will be available at Harley-Davidson dealerships currently present in 12 cities across the country. Special variant gets electronically-adjustable semi-active suspension and a host of other useful features.Harley-Davidson has launched its first adventure-tourer in the country, the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250. Both the standard and Special variants are available, priced at Rs 16,90,000 and Rs 19,99,000 (both ex-showroom India), respectively. The pricing is pretty impressive considering the bikes come as CBUs (Completely Built Unit). For reference, the motorcycle in the USA costs an equivalent of about Rs 12.89 lakh (for the base variant) and around Rs 14.88 lakh (for Special). Bookings are now open, but expect the delivery timelines to be announced soon.
The Pan America will be sold across Harley’s dealerships in India, spread across 12 cities. The company’s Indian partner, Hero MotoCorp, has been working on expanding Harley’s footprint here in the country. So, expect the bike maker to set up more dealerships moving forward.
The adventure tourer is powered by the all-new Revolution Max 1250 motor. This 1252cc engine is a liquid-cooled V-twin unit complete with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) technology (similar to the Yamaha R15 V3.0), claimed to widen the overall powerband, enhance torque management, and offer better mileage. With 152.2PS at 9,000rpm and 127Nm at 6,750rpm on tap, the engine offers a claimed mileage of 20.4kmpl, commendable for a bike of its class. The engine works alongside a 6-speed transmission with assist and slipper clutch. It also gets internal counterbalancers to ensure optimum refinement.
The engine is enhanced by a suite of rider aids, including five riding modes (Road, Sport, Rain, Off-Road, and Off-Road Plus) and two extra modes (Custom and Custom Off-road Plus) in the Special variant. Then there’s standard cornering-enhanced traction control, engine braking control, and ABS to keep the rubber side down at all times. The motorcycle also gets a hill-hold control for extra practicality.
The standard model features a 47mm inverted front fork and a linked rear monoshock, both fully adjustable (compression, rebound and spring preload). The suspension is linked to a 19-inch front and a 17-inch rear cast aluminium wheel with Michelin Scorcher Adventure tyres as standard. On the other hand, the Special variant comes with 47mm Showa Balance Free Forks (BFF) and a Showa BFRC (Balanced Free Rear Cushion-lite) rear monoshock, both electronically actuated semi-active units. This can be paired with the optional Adaptive Ride Height feature, bringing down the seat height from 850mm to 830mm when the bike is stationary. That said, it is still pretty tall, and riders must also factor in the massive 258kg kerb weight.
Oh, and the Special variant also gets optional spoke wheels with tubeless tyres for superior off-road performance. Other features for this variant include a standard tyre pressure monitoring system, steering damper, and heated grips. Both bikes have all-LED lighting, with the Special variant featuring a cornering headlamp. The 6.8-inch TFT screen should keep the rider informed about everything about the journey.
The Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 will compete with the BMW R 1250 GS, Honda CRF 1100L Africa Twin, and the soon-to-be-launched Ducati Multistrada V4. If you fancy high-speed touring, you could also go for the 2021 Suzuki Hayabusa, which is priced almost the same as the Pan America’s base variant.
