Two Svartpilen 401’s make for a powerful chariot racer

Horse chariot racing was a big sport in the olden times, but motorcycle chariot racing is something that came into existence in the late 1920s and still exists in some parts of the world. Jack Field, a freestyle rider, has made a Husqvarna chariot by joining two Svartpilen 401’s to a conventional cart for the Motorcycle Chariot Racing Championship at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in Sydney, Australia.

From the looks of it, the concept and set up seems pretty simple with a conventional chariot attached to two motorcycles. But the mechanism is pretty complex as one cannot operate rear brakes and gear shifter conventionally.

Two long linkages are attached to each handlebar which, via a mechanism, controls the throttle of the bikes. These linkages are also used to steer the machine.

Powering the Husqvarna Svartpilen is a 373.2cc, single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine producing 43.5PS and 35Nm. When coupled to make the chariot, the machine together would make almost 90PS of combined power with 70Nm of torque. You guessed it right, those numbers are quite high and the machine would be pretty dangerous, however, the race takes place on an off road circuit, in a controlled environment ridden by professionals.
