EICMA 2019: KTM 390 Adventure Unveiled, India Launch In December

The 390 Adventure’s engine features traction control, a first in its segment. It features ADV-friendly bits like adjustable long-travel suspension and a bigger front wheel with dual-purpose tyres. Expect KTM India to price the bike at around Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom).

 

KTM has finally unveiled its long-awaited motorcycle, the 390 Adventure, at 2019 EICMA. The Austrian bikemaker is likely to launch the bike in December this year, and it could be priced at around Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom) in India.

Powering the ADV is the KTM 390 Duke’s 373.2cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, also in  the same state of tune: 43.5PS at 9000rpm and 37Nm at 7000rpm. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed unit with slipper clutch. It goes without saying that the motor is compliant with Euro 5/ BS6 emission norms. More importantly, the engine gets traction control, which the 390 Duke lacks.

To help the bike tame rough terrain, it comes equipped with rebound and compression-adjustable long-travel inverted fork and a rebound and preload-adjustable monoshock, both sourced from WP. The front suspension gets 170mm of travel while the rear comes with 177mm. It rolls on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels shod with dual-purpose Continental TKC dual-purpose tyres. We’d have liked it had KTM offered spoke wheels as standard as they are better equipped to handle shock loads than alloys. Brakes include a 320mm disc up front with radial caliper and a 230mm disc at the rear.

Design-wise, the 390 Adventure looks quite similar to its bigger sibling, the 790 Adventure. It gets an all-LED lighting system, a TFT screen with smartphone pairing capability and ergonomics that’s apt for stand-up riding. KTM has also equipped the 390 Adventure with a windshield which should keep wind blasts at bay while cruising at high speeds. Interestingly, the fuel tank capacity, at 14.5 litres, is up by only 1.1 litres compared to the 390 Duke.

As far as the seat height is concerned, it’s a bit tall at 855mm, standing 25mm more than the 390 Duke. Being an adventure tourer, KTM has blessed the bike with ample ground clearance -- 200mm to be precise. This makes it stand 15mm higher off the ground than the 390 Duke.

In terms of competition, the bike will be the perfect middle ground between the more affordable Royal Enfield Himalayan and the premium BMW G 310 GS and Kawasaki Versys-X 300 in the Indian market.
