EXCLUSIVE: TVS Fiero 125 Incoming

TVS recently applied for a trademark of the name

The TVS Fiero 125 is expected to be launched in mid-2021. It will mark TVS’ re-entry into the 125cc motorcycle segment in India after the TVS Phoenix 125. Expect the upcoming bike to undercut the Honda SP125 in terms of pricing.

TVS is all set to re-enter the 125cc motorcycle segment in India with its new TVS Fiero 125. The Hosur-based brand had earlier filed a trademark for the name. If you can recall, the TVS Fiero was the first 150cc four-stroke performance-oriented bike from the brand. It actually laid the foundation for the TVS Apache range, as far as performance motorcycling is concerned. Now, it seems TVS is looking to cash in on the Fiero’s fame once again, albeit in a 125cc guise.

You may ask, why 125cc instead of a 150cc bike? Well, it makes sense from a business point of view as currently, the 125cc motorcycle segment has become the new 150cc space in terms of pricing. The new safety and emission norms have pushed most 150cc motorcycles towards the 1 lakh-rupee mark. The average price of 125cc motorcycles is now at a point where 150cc bikes used to be before the new regulations. Thanks to this trend, 125cc motorcycles are slowly gaining more popularity. So it makes sense for TVS to use this opportunity to come up with a 125cc bike.

As the name suggests, it is likely to have performance-oriented genes to justify the ‘Fiero’ moniker. Expect the motorcycle to be powered by a derivation of the TVS NTorq 125’s 124.8cc, single-cylinder, three-valve, fuel-injected motor. In the scooter, it produces 9.38PS and 10.5Nm, but the Fiero 125 is likely to push out more power and torque. It could get a 5-speed transmission as that seems to be the norm for most premium 125cc motorcycles.

Interestingly, the TVS Flame 125 also had a similar engine as the NTorq 125. It also had a 3-valve configuration but it made 10.64PS and 10Nm. It was then replaced by the TVS Phoenix 125 after the controversy with Bajaj over spark plug technology. The Phoenix was the last 125cc motorcycle from the brand for the Indian market, before being discontinued due to the stringent safety and emission norms.

Now with the TVS Fiero 125, we hope the brand can get back into the action in the 125cc motorcycle segment. Expect TVS to launch the motorcycle in mid-2021. As far as pricing is concerned, it could be around Rs 70,000 (ex-showroom), undercutting its rival, the Honda SP 125. The bike will also go up against the Hero Glamour 125 and the Bajaj Pulsar 125.
