Heres the lowdown on Hero’s newest little streetfighter

[Update: Hero Xtreme 160R Launched In India. Click Here For More Details]

With the discontinuation of the Achiever 150 last year and the Xtreme Sports earlier this year, it would be easy to get fooled into thinking that Hero is diverting its attention away from the 150cc segment. Today’s unveiling of the new Xtreme 160R, though, shows that Hero is back with a vengeance and out for blood. Here are all the details about the brand’s newest little streetfighter:

Based On An EICMA Concept

Hero was one of the few Indian manufacturers with something interesting to show at EICMA 2019. One such interesting showcase was the somewhat outlandish Xtreme 1R concept. Look back now and the similarities between the 160R and the 1R are plain to see. The butch, streetfighter stance is still very much there, though minus some of the tastier bits of the concept.

An All-New Heart

Powering the 160R is an all-new, BS6-compliant, air-cooled 160cc motor. Its output figures of 15.21PS and 14Nm mean that it not only manages the dash from 0-60kmph in 4.7sec but also outclasses competitors like the Pulsar 150 and even the Apache RTR 160 (both in BS6 form). Of course, being BS6-compliant, this motor is fed by a fuel injection system, and if Hero’s previous FI systems are anything to go by, throttle response should be crisp and precise.

Competent Underpinnings

It’s not just the motor that shines through on this bike either. With disc brakes at both ends on the top-end variant, single-channel ABS and a 7-step preload-adjustable monoshock, the little Xtreme’s underpinnings are quite respectable too. Though the 1R concept featured a USD fork, the production bike gets a more cost-effective conventional unit, and everything is held together by a single-downtube frame.

Feature Frenzy

The good news isn’t over just yet, and that’s because the Xtreme is quite rich on features too. Highlights include fully-digital instrumentation, full-LED lighting, a side-stand engine cut-off and the aforementioned ABS. These should mean that the 160R’s brochure will be a well-populated affair.

You Can’t Buy One Yet

We’ll have to wait just a little bit longer to get our hands on Hero’s streetfighter, because for now it has only been unveiled and not launched. An official launch is expected next month, when we expect a price of around Rs 90,000 to 95,000 to be announced. That will put it up against the likes of the TVS Apache RTR 160 2V and Bajaj Pulsar 150.
