Honda CB500X vs Benelli TRK 502: Spec Comparison

Modified On Mar 12, 2020 12:44 PM By Benjamin Noel Gracias for Honda CB500X

Honda is all set to launch its 500cc entry-level ADV in India. How does it stack up against the only other 500cc ADV already available here?

Honda will be launching its entire 500cc range in India this year. The list also includes its road-biased adventure tourer, the CB500X. When launched here, it is expected to be priced in the ballpark of the Benelli TRK 502. Here’s an on-paper comparison to see which one offers more value.

Engine and performance:

Engine

Power

Torque

43Nm @ 6500rpm

46Nm @ 6000rpm

Power-to-weight

241PS/ton

202PS/ton

While both ADVs offer identical power outputs, the Benelli here makes 3Nm more torque at a lower rpm. However, the TRK 502 weighs a whopping 38kg more than the CB500X and that will no doubt hamper its performance. While the Benelli has a vibe-free motor, the Honda offers better refinement. Both get a six-speed gearbox but the CB500X gets a slipper clutch as well. On paper, the Honda wins this round.

The Benelli here trumps when it comes to underpinnings with its more sophisticated suspension setup. It also offers rebound adjustment at the rear. While the Honda CB500X sold overseas gets preload-adjustable forks, it could be dropped in the India-spec version to reduce costs. Even on the braking front, the Benelli has the upper hand with its dual disc setup and larger rear disc. However, given the fact that the TRK 502 also has an extra 38kg weight disadvantage, it does affect braking performance to a certain degree. Both motorcycles get dual-channel ABS. While the TRK 502 gets road-focused tyres, the CB500X gets dual-purpose tyres.

The Benelli TRK 502 is clearly the larger motorcycle here, dwarfing the CB500X in dimensions. But it is more accessible to shorter riders owing to its 30mm lower seat height. It also offers better ground clearance and a larger fuel tank that should help extend the range. The only bugbear is the high kerb weight that takes some getting used to.

Pricing:

Honda CB500X

Benelli TRK 502

Ex-showroom Delhi

Rs 5.5 lakh (expected)

Rs 5.1 lakh

Now the Honda CB500X, when launched in India, will come with a Euro 4 / BS6 motor. Benelli has yet to introduce its BS6 motorcycle in India and we expect the TRK 502 BS6 to cost around Rs 20,000 more than the current BS4 model. That would mean a Rs 20,000 difference between the two bikes’ prices. Honda will initially bring the bike via the CKD route and localise them later, so expect prices to drop in the future. Benelli has no plans of localisation for now. For the higher asking price, the Honda offers better levels of fit and finish refinement and performance but loses out in the underpinnings department. For a clearer picture, we will be comparing both motorcycles in the real world soon.
