Italjet Dragster: A New Breed Of Superscooter Nears Production

It will be available in four colour schemes including a limited edition model

New liveries give us a glimpse of the final production-ready model. The Italjet Dragster will be sold in Japan through MV Agusta. Available with two engine specs: 125cc and 200cc. Features a trellis frame, cast aluminium plates, and an independent steering system.

The Italjet Dragster in its concept and near-production form received an overwhelming response at EICMA 2018 and 2019.  The subsequent step involved taking the Dragster into production for the Japanese market -- sold via MV Agusta Japan. However, COVID-19 just had to play spoilsport once again delaying the production of the scooter until September 2020 and pushing its Japan launch to the end of 2020. But, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. The brand has revealed the Dragster in four colours options including a limited edition model. 

Adding to its exclusivity is a limited run of just 499 units for the ‘First Edition’ model. This unique model uses a sinister black livery with touches of magnesium highlights that bring the scooter to life. Intricate details involve individual serial numbers etched onto the scooter. And if the limited edition model doesn’t fancy you, you could also choose from the standard selection of colours: white/red, yellow and black/grey. These liveries give us a glimpse of the final production-ready model.

The beauty of the Dragster lies in its aggressive design language. The stripped-down design showcases the Dragster’s beautiful trellis frame, cast aluminium plates, an independent steering system and an offset monoshock. Up front, you have a split projector headlamp with eyebrow-like LED DRLs while the rear section looks like the previous-gen Ducati Panigale.

As mentioned before, there are two engine options. The 125cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor makes 14.9PS and 12.5Nm while the 200cc mill belts out 19.8PS and 17Nm, more than the Yamaha R15 V3.0! Interestingly, the fuel tank is placed in the middle on top of the floorboard which improves the centre of gravity. It also features chunky tyres for better stability and disc brakes at both ends for stopping power.

As for the price, the Dragstar 125 costs 638,000 Yen, equivalent to around Rs 4.45 lakh, while the Dragstar 200 retails at 689,500 Yen (Rs 4.81 lakh). Sounds illogical for India, right? That’s because it is. Like all Italian designs, the Dragster looks the part and comes at a price, a premium one at that.
