May 2021 Two-Wheeler Sales Report: Pandemic Drags Sales Further Down
COVID-19 plunges sales by as much as 50 percent and Hero MotoCorp loses its crown
The sales reports from all major two-wheeler brands are in. The shutdown of dealerships and production units because of the coronavirus-induced lockdown has adversely affected overall sales, but the numbers are better than May 2020. Here are the brand-wise domestic two-wheeler sales numbers:

Of its total sales, Bajaj managed to sell 60,432 two-wheelers domestically. With 1,80,212 bikes exported, Bajaj raked in a combined 2,40,554 unit sales helping it grab the top spot with respect to overall sales. In comparison to last year, the brand sold 1,27,756 more units in May 2021.
Hero MotoCorp recorded 1,59,561 domestic unit sales, although one cannot overlook its April 2021 record of 3.42 lakh units. Hero’s reliance on domestic sales meant that overall numbers for the brand weren't healthy and it managed to export only 23,489 units.
However, compared to its May 2020 domestic sales, Hero managed to sell 50,713 more bikes and scooters this year.
EXCLUSIVE: Honda CRF300L Patented In India, Will Honda Bring This Off-roader? Honda CB350RS: Road Test Review Yamaha FZ25 And FZS 25 Receive A Massive Price CutTVS Motor sold 52,084 units in the Indian market during May 2021, which is almost one-fourth of its April sales numbers. Maintaining a firm grip in the international market, TVS exported 1,02,332 units, which helped it grab the third position with respect to overall sales.
The most adversely affected brand by the COVID-19 pandemic was Honda. Its domestic sales slumped to 38,763 units in May from 2,40,100 in April, this year. And the numbers don’t hit a notable high even if we combine the 19,405 units exported this month.
Lastly, Royal Enfield managed to sell 20,073 bikes in the country and exported 7,221 units. These numbers are better than the previous year, as the brand witnessed 43 percent overall growth, though it was still half of its April domestic sales. Long waiting periods had already affected sales and the lockdown made things even more difficult for the iconic brand. However, with the 2021 Classic 350 set to launch soon, Royal Enfield will no doubt be banking on the upcoming bike to revive sales.
Hopefully, as the number of cases reduces and lockdown restrictions are eased, the companies shall gain their sales momentum back with the dealerships being accessible to the masses. So if you’re planning to buy a new two-wheeler, do check out the upcoming two-wheeler launches in June 2021.
