We’ve known for a while that Royal Enfield has been working on its electric portfolio since 2018. Last we heard, the prototypes were already prepared and were awaiting their segment allotment. Now, Royal Enfield’s MD, Siddhartha Lal has revealed that the company’s plans are right on track. They are being developed alongside the manufacturer’s ICE offerings.

These premium electric vehicles will stick to Royal Enfield’s trademark retro styling but might get a few modern touches that we’ve seen on bikes like the Meteor 350 and Concept KX. While we haven’t seen any of these bikes in the flesh, we could expect them to look something like the Classic 350-based Photon, built by Electric Classic Cars (ECC). The bike was showcased to Sid Lal and his team of engineers who seemed to have been thoroughly impressed with the electric conversion.

We think these bikes could be more commuter oriented than full-fledged tourers since there are limitations to battery tech such as range anxiety. If it is indeed a tourer, it ideally should offer a triple-digit range with the option to swap  or quick charge the batteries.

That said, details regarding battery architecture, charging infrastructure, drivetrain and various other electric vehicle-related bits remain pretty vague at the moment. The Indian electric motorcycle segment is still at its nascent stage at the moment with the only option being the Revolt RV 400. However, this may soon change once Ultraviolette Automotive comes into the picture with the F77 which is expected to retail at around Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom).
