New Bajaj-Triumph Motorcycle Launch In 2022

It will be the first of many small to mid-capacity motorcycles to come out of the Bajaj-Triumph partnership

Bajaj and Triumph will formally sign the partnership contract in December, 2019.  Meanwhile, a running prototype of the upcoming motorcycle is already ready.  The new motorcycles will use an all-new platform and motor. 

 

The Bajaj-Triumph joint venture will see its first motorcycle out by the year 2022. The new motorcycle will be the first of many small to mid-capacity motorcycle to come out of this partnership. Triumph has already begun development of an all-new platform and motor and has a running prototype ready. This platform will be exclusive to Triumph, with no platform sharing between the new bikes and Bajaj. Bajaj can use knowledge received from the partnership though, but the details are yet to be discussed. According to the JV (joint venture), Bajaj will take care of sales in Asian countries where Triumph does not have a presence. In India, the motorcycle will be sold via Triumph dealerships. 

Speaking to Moneycontrol, Steve Sargent, Chief Product Officer of Triumph Motorcycles elaborated that the upcoming motorcycles will have a common engine platform with engine capacities between 250cc and 750cc. The engine capacities have been finalised with the help of Bajaj. 

What could the new motorcycle be?

If we were to bet our money, we would put it on a small to mid capacity retro motorcycle to take on the likes of the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Jawa and the Interceptor 650. Given the retro directive,wide engine capacity range, and cost it would have to be a parallel twin motor. Since there will be multiple engine configurations, we expect to see a 400cc and 750cc motor capacities. This would allow Triumph to target not just the Royal Enfield 650 twins but also larger machines like the Harley Davidson Street 750. Given Triumphs experience with retro motorcycles aka Bonnevilles, we expect the motor to be liquid-cooled. It might skip extra features like ride-by-wire, traction control and rider modes. 

Steve had also mentioned different bike styles. Like the Bonnevilles, we can expect the smaller Triumphs to spawn classic, neo-retro, cafe-racer, cruiser and bobber body styles. Stay tuned for more information.
