Production-ready 2020 RE Thunderbird 350 X Spied Testing

Modified On Sep 24, 2019 10:34 AM By Gaurav Sadanand for Royal Enfield Meteor 350

The new images of the 2020 Thunderbird 350 X showcase just how much the bike has changed compared to the current-gen model

The handlebars look similar to the one on the current-gen Thunderbird 350X.  Features a single-pod instrument console, likely a semi-digital unit. The 2020 Thunderbird 350 X is powered by an all-new engine based on the brand’s ‘J’ platform. Expected to be launched early next year.

We’ve already seen the 2020 Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 X testing on a number of occasions in the past couple of months. This time around, though, an entire fleet of near-production-ready Thunderbird 350 X motorcycles were spied testing together. And the captured images showcase just how much the bike has changed compared to the current-gen model.

To begin with, all four bikes are finished in a gloss black paint scheme which looks rather premium, while its mechanicals like the engine, alloy wheels and the front fork receive a matte black treatment. The fuel tank in particular appears to be slightly longer than its predecessor and could hold more fuel. The single-piece seat has been replaced with a split seat unit which is likely to get more padding for added comfort. Interestingly, the footpegs have a flat profile for more surface area unlike the footrests on the current model that have a rounded design.

The bike’s switchgear has been redesigned to look like retro dial-type units which are similar to the ones seen on the 2020 Royal Enfield Classic 350. The 2020 Thunderbird 350 X also features adjustable levers and a single-pod instrument console, which is likely to be a semi-digital unit.

The 2020 model employs a dual-cradle frame instead of the single downtube chassis that’s seen on the current model. We’ve already covered the rest of the cosmetic changes in detail here, while the bike’s probable accessory list is available here. The powertrain, on the other hand, looks like it’s based on the brand’s ‘J’ platform, which could have its displacement bumped up from the current 350cc to 400cc and may also comply with the upcoming BS6 emission norms.

Taking into account that the current-gen model retails at Rs 1.63 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), we expect the 2020 Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 X to carry a price tag of around Rs 1.8 lakh to 1.85 lakh (ex-showroom) with an early 2020 launch timeline. Once launched, the 2020 Thunderbird 350 X will compete against the 2019 Bajaj Dominar 400.
