Royal Enfield Roadster: What To Expect

Modified On Feb 18, 2020 10:04 AM By Gaurav Sadanand for Royal Enfield Hunter 350

Recent spy images give us a peek into Royal Enfield’s upcoming roadster

Royal Enfield’s J-platform seems to have spawned yet another motorcycle, which is likely to take on the likes of the Jawa Forty Two and the bike that’ll emerge from the Triumph-Bajaj partnership. It gets revised ergos for a sportier stance and may procure a larger engine. Here’s what you can expect from the upcoming Royal Enfield Roadster.

Sportier ergos:

The most prominent difference is the bike's ergonomics, which is a lot sportier than the next-gen RE's spotted earlier. For starters, the rear sub-frame appears to be sitting lower than usual and features a flatter, wider, single-piece seat. The bike also has mid-set footpegs and a lower handlebar, which should result in an engaging ride. The rider's seat on the Thunderbird 350X, in comparison, is scooped out while its footpegs are pushed further out for better comfort.

A bigger, more powerful engine:

The roadster, much like the rest of RE’s J-platform, comes equipped with a new single-cylinder engine. Considering its sporty character, we believe the bike may employ a larger engine, which will eventually replace the now-discontinued 500cc motor. So, anticipate a larger 400-450cc mill with fuel injection, which will comply with BS6-emission norms.

A different exhaust:

Another visible change is the new upswept exhaust with a stubbier end-can replacing the traditional setup.

Similar hardware:

The underpinnings seem to be the same as the Thunderbird 350X. Although, a new motor means the final drive has been repositioned. It now sits on the left-hand side. This could result in minor changes to the swingarm and rear wheel assembly. Similarly, the front disc has switched sides.

Expected launch/unveiling timeline?

So, when can we expect to see the roadster in the flesh? We suspect Royal Enfield will showcase its entire 2020 portfolio at EICMA 2020. What remains uncertain are the two new names recently trademarked by RE: Sherpa and Hunter. The brand could reserve these bikes for when Triumph-Bajaj introduces its affordable cruiser, which is likely to be launched in 2022.
