Royal Enfield’s Electric Vehicle To Be Launched In 2024

Modified On Feb 7, 2023 02:52 PM By Bernard Mascarenhas for Royal Enfield Flying Flea C6

The company’s silent revolution seems to gather more steam

After sharing a small insight into its electric ambitions in an investor presentation, Royal Enfield seems to have accelerated its focus on electric mobility. The brand has plans of investing between USD 100 to 150 million towards the development of a dedicated electric platform, currently codenamed ‘L’.

Similar to the J-platform, the electric L-platform will spawn various styles of motorcycles, aimed to cater to a range of people. Internally, these products have been christened L1A, L1B, and L1C. A prototype from this platform is expected to be made ready within 12 months, with the brand looking to get it validated and ready to launch in 2024.

The marque has also roped in former Ola Electric CTO Umesh Krishnappa to spearhead its EV division, and he aims to deliver by 2024. A dedicated team has been set up in India and the UK to spearhead Royal Enfield’s foray into the zero emission mobility space.

The timeline for Royal Enfield’s first electric bike does look aggressive, and it also explains the brand’s move of acquiring a 10 percent stake in Stark Future, a Spanish electric dirt-bike manufacturer. This acquisition should help Royal Enfield accelerate its move into the electric vehicle space, as both the entities would co-develop bikes in the future, and Royal Enfield could use Stark’s electric prowess in its L platform too.

Upcoming Royal Enfield electric bikes may feature Stark’s proprietary technology to offer the rider a balance between performance and range. We feel that the first electric Royal Enfield could be a retro bike that will help the brand convey a feeling of familiarity, while also packing its future technology.
