Top 5 Electric Two-Wheeler Startups To Watch Out For: BattRE, Revolt, Tork, And More
These newcomers are looking to make a mark in the EV space with some interesting creations
While the Indian two-wheeler industry has been dominated by big players like Bajaj, Hero and Honda, electric mobility has given rise to quite a few startups. Here are a few interesting ones whose products are an exercise in out-of-the-box thinking in terms of design, features or overall ride experience. We have consciously left out Ather and 22 Motors from this list as both have been covered extensively in the past and are already in the big league, having received huge funding from automotive bigwigs. Let’s get on with the list then.
BattRE:
BattRE-scooter, Rs 63,555
This Jaipur-based startup has some of the best minds of the Industry at the helm. Its first product, the BattRE E-scooter, at 74kg, is one of the lightest electric scooters in the world. The company is currently present in four cities - Nagpur, Hyderabad, Anantapur and Kurnool - each with a different demographic. This allows it to better understand the mindset of customers looking at going electric. However, the company has big plans of covering over 50 cities by the end of the year. Its next bike, which will be a delivery scooter with a top box at the rear and storage at the front, definitely earns them a place on this list. Targeted at food delivery riders, BattRE is looking at the possibility of leasing out the scooters to individuals at a low cost. The scooter’s lithium-ion battery can be fully charged in four hours and has a claimed range of up to 90km However, its scooter misses out on Fame-II subsidy owing to its lower 25kmph top speed and it is something the company needs to work on to reduce the current retail price of Rs 63,555.

Revolt Motors:
Revolt E-bike, Rs 1.2 lakh (expected), launch by September 2019
While we have seen a lot of electric scooters, the first product from Revolt will be an electric motorcycle. Revolt has already achieved 75 per cent localisation for its upcoming bike that’s expected to be launched by September this year. This motorcycle has an electronically limited top speed of 85kmph, which can be increased to 100kmph. It boasts of a range of 150km. We like the fact that the company has not gone the low-cost, bare-bones mobility way and instead opt for high-spec underpinnings like an upside down fork and radially mounted front brakes. The fact that it has the capacity to mass produce 1.2 lakh electric bikes per year is another big plus. So hopefully, a future with lots of electric motorcycles on the road isn’t too far away.

Tork Motors:
Tork T6X, Rs 1.25 lakh (expected), launch by December 2019
One of the first electric bike startups, Tork, has been around for more than seven years. Tork has poured its experience from racing electric motorcycles at the iconic Isle of Man TT into the development of its homegrown T6X electric motorcycle. The T6X might look like a conventional motorcycle but boasts of features like a TFT screen with app and cloud connectivity. Tork claims the T6X can cruise at 100kmph and has a range of around 100km. It can also charge its battery to 80 pe rcent of its capacity in one hour. However, Tork is yet to launch the bike, which is surprising since it have been developing it for quite a few years.

Polarity Smart bikes:
Polarity E-bike, Rs 65,000 (expected), launch by August 2019
This Pune based startup is playing the electric game in a different way. While its upcoming electric two-wheeler looks like an electric-assisted cycle, Polarity’s founder claims it is the other way round. The electric moped gets pedals for the rare occasion when you run out of juice. It has high-spec suspension in the form of upside-down forks, a twin disc brake setup and a claimed top speed of 100kmph! While it is coming up with novel concepts, the new electric moped has its limitations - there is no pillion seat or storage space.

Avan Motors:
Xero, Rs 46,000
Avan is a Pune-based startup as well, and it has three electric scooters in its portfolio: Trend E, Xero and Xero+. Its scooters are all powered by lithium-ion batteries but are more mass market than futuristic EVs. The company claims its scooters have a range of 60km (110km with an extra battery pack), a top speed of 45kmph and the ability to carry a maximum load of 150kg. Also, the fact that the prices for its most affordable scooter starts at Rs 46,000 makes the company appealing to buyers on a budget.
