Modified On Apr 24, 2022 03:50 PM By Aamir Momin for Yamaha R15 V4

Here’s which one of the supersport’s models you should go for

In 2008, Yamaha introduced the R15 small-displacement fully-faired motorcycle to the world and it was an instant hit due to its unparalleled performance and stunning looks. It gave a new lease of life for Yamaha in India, and after almost 14 years of dominating the entry-level sportbike segment, the Yamaha R15 is still going strong with multiple variants and versions to choose from. What are they and what suits you the best, we explain.

Yamaha R15 V3

Yamaha launched the third iteration of its supersport, R15, in 2017, which was called the R15 V3. The bike received major upgrades as compared to its predecessors. It gets a more aggressive and sporty design as compared to the R15 V2, and a lowered passenger seat for comfortable riding. It features LED headlight and taillight along with a fully digital instrument cluster.

More importantly, it received an all new 155cc liquid-cooled engine with VVA (variable valve actuation) that produces 18.6PS at 1000rpm and 14.1Nm at 8500rpm. It is mated to a six-speed gearbox with assist and slipper clutch. VVA helps in bringing a fine balance of low-end grunt and top-end drive.

It is suspended on a conventional telescopic fork up front and monoshock at the rear. Braking duties are handled by discs on both ends with dual-channel ABS.

Most of the equipment on the V3 was a first for the R15 brand, making it a sensational product, and perfect for beginner riders who want performance and are ready to overlook fancy equipment and features. The R15 V3 is priced at Rs 1,58,700 (ex-showroom Delhi), the most affordable in the family.

Yamaha R15 S

The Yamaha R15 S is exactly the same as the R15 V3 in terms of powertrain, underpinnings and equipment, however, it gets slight cosmetic changes. The major difference between the two bikes is the broad single seat setup on the R15 S that makes for a more comfortable everyday rider and pillion as compared to the V3. This model would suit someone looking for a stellar performance but with more practical and everyday usage. It is priced at Rs 1,59,100 (ex-showroom Delhi).

Yamaha R15 V4

Yamaha launched the R15 Version 4 in 2021 flaunting updated features, more equipment and a redesigned body. The bike is now even more aggressive and aerodynamic with sharper body panels. The R15 V4 gets a slightly bigger fairing, covering a larger portion of the bike. The bike now gets a new single pod LED headlight with LED DRLs.

The V4 is powered by the same engine, however, this time around it makes 18.4PS at 10000rpm and maximum torque of 14.2Nm at 7500rpm. That is 0.2PS less than its predecessor, however, it produces 0.1Nm more torque at a lower rpm.

A major upgrade on the V4 is the Bluetooth-enabled fully digital instrument cluster with smartphone connectivity which also displays street and track data. Apart from that, the bike also features traction control as standard equipment and an optional quickshifter, both segment firsts.

If you are someone looking to improve your riding skills and wants an absolute performer that comes packed with all the modern day tech and fancy equipment, then this bike is for you. It is priced at Rs 1,76,300 (ex-showroom Delhi).

Yamaha R15M

The R15M is the top-spec variant of the R15 V4 and gets everything that the V4 gets, plus a bit more. The M variant gets the quickshifter as standard and a special livery with logo and exclusive colours.

This bike is well suited for someone who wants to get an incredible performer, wants all the modern day tech and additionally wants some exclusivity. The R15 M is the most expensive of the lot, priced at Rs 1,86,300 (ex-showroom Delhi).
