A closer look at the latest avatar of Yamaha’s most popular sports bike in India

Yamaha stumped everyone with the launch of the new YZF-R15 V4. The Japanese bikemaker’s only supersport for the Indian market has received a host of updates that should now make it an even more promising prospect. Let’s take a closer look at the bike.

The Yamaha R15 has been one of the most popular small sportbikes in the country. Credits to its sharp and aggressive style as well as the small albeit powerful motor. For 2021, the baby Yammie gets a YZF-R7 inspired fascia that employs a projector headlight flanked by LED DRLs. The fairing too has been tweaked for better aerodynamics.

The new R15 is offered in three different variants: R15 V4, R15M and the R15M MotoGP Edition.

All three variants use the same 155cc liquid-cooled motor that belts out 18.35PS and 14.2Nm. It’s mated to a 6-speed gearbox and gets a slipper and assist clutch. Yamaha has also thrown in a quickshifter for clutchless upshifts as a standard equipment on select models.

Diving deeper in the range, the R15 V4 gets three colour options to choose from: Metallic Red, Dark Knight and Racing Blue.

On the feature front, Yamaha has equipped the entire lineup with a new digital console with Bluetooth Connectivity via the Y-connect app. This lets you access call and SMS alerts as well as the mobile battery status. It also gets a lap timer and two display modes (Street and Track).

While the traction control is standard for all the models, the quickshifter has been limited to an optional extra for the R15 V4 Metallic Red and Dark Knight. It’s standard on the R15 V4 Racing Blue, R15M and the R15 MotoGP Edition.

Finally, Yamaha has suspended the bike on a USD fork. Not just that, the R15M also gets anodised blue fork caps for added aesthetics.

Braking hardware consists of a 282mm front and 220mm rear disc with dual-channel ABS. The M variant uses a golden coloured brake calliper.

Apart from the fancy fork caps, the R15M also gets a carbon-like material for the seat cover and an R15M emblem on the pillion seat. The MotoGP Edition is draped in blue and black colour with the Monster Energy MotoGP livery on it.

Asking price for the R15 V4 starts at Rs 1,67,800 and goes to Rs 1,72,800 for the Racing Blue colour. Meanwhile, the R15M costs Rs 1,77,800 and the MotoGP version retails at Rs 1,79,800.
