Triumph Speed 400

Change Bike

The Speed 400 has the potential to replicate the same magic that Bajaj created with the KTM 390 Duke a decade ago. If you're in the market for a well-priced, well-rounded bike, the Triumph Speed 400 deserves your attention. However, if you're into off-roading, the Triumph Scrambler 400X should be the one you consider. Either way, Triumph and Bajaj have struck gold once again, bringing premium quality and performance to a broader audience.

About Triumph Speed 400

Last Updated 5 Days back

Triumph has launched the updated 2025 Speed 400 along with a more affordable Speed T4 variant. The Speed 400 now gets 4 updated colour options. You can check them out here. We help you choose the perfect 400cc Triumph bike that's suited for you. Also, here’s how it differs from the Speed T4.

We compared the Triumph Speed 400 against the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 and the Hero Mavrick 440 in a 0-100kmph acceleration test and here is how it turned out.

What is the price of the Triumph Speed 400?

The 2025 Triumph Speed 400 is priced at Rs 2,40,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) - making it Rs 6,000 more expensive than the launch price, and is available in only one variant.

What are the colour options available on the Speed 400?

The Speed 400 is available in 4 colour options: Racing Yellow/Pearl Metallic White (new for 2025), Racing Red/Pearl Metallic White, Pearl Metallic White/Pewter Grey & Phantom Black/Pewter Grey.

What is the engine capacity of the Speed 400?

As the name suggests, the Speed 400 uses an all-new 398.15cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. It produces 40PS at 8000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6500rpm, working in conjunction with a 6-speed transmission with a slip-and-assist clutch. Triumph offers a generous 16,000km service interval on the Speed 400.

What features does the Speed 400 get?

The Triumph Speed 400 features LED lighting, sleek bar-end mirrors, adjustable levers, convenient switchable traction control, and Bosch dual-channel ABS. While its semi-digital instrument cluster does not include smartphone connectivity or navigation, it offers a wealth of information such as a gear position indicator, distance-to-empty readout, and useful tell-tale lights. Additionally, it provides a USB-C port for charging electronic devices mounted on the handlebar. Triumph also offers a range of accessories for the Speed 400, including heated grips, LED indicators, and luggage options, all backed by a generous two-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

What are the specifications of the Speed 400?

The Speed 400 is built on a hybrid spine/perimeter tubular steel frame, which houses the engine. The rear subframe is bolted onto this frame, and the front suspension features a 43mm inverted Big Piston Fork, offering 130mm of wheel travel. At the rear, there's a gas-charged monoshock with preload adjustability, and offers 120mm of wheel travel. The motorcycle rides on 17-inch aluminium alloy wheels, fitted with Vredestein radial tyres. Braking power is provided by a 300mm disc at the front with a radial calliper, and a 230mm disc at the rear, both manufactured by ByBre. The seat height is 803mm and a 13 litre fuel tank.

What is the mileage of the Speed 400?

Triumph claims that the Speed 400 will return a mileage of 28.3kmpl.

What has changed for the 2025 Speed 400 model?

How is the Speed 400 different from the Speed T4?

The Speed 400 shares its engine with the new Speed T4 but offers higher performance, producing 40.5PS and 37.5Nm of torque, which is 9.5PS and 1.5Nm more than the T4. Both motorcycles come equipped with 17-inch wheels, but the Speed 400 has a wider 150-section rear tyre compared to the 140-section tyre on the T4. The Speed 400 is fitted with Vredestein radial tyres, whereas the T4 uses MRF Zapper-FX2 tyres. Additional features on the Speed 400 include a thicker seat cushion and adjustable levers.

Speed 400 Expert Review

BikeDekho Experts

Overview

The Triumph Speed 400, developed in collaboration with Bajaj, is powered by a 398cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. It's targeted at both new riders and seasoned bikers who want a versatile machine for city commutes and highway rides. The bike promises to deliver a fun and engaging riding experience at a competitive price. It shares its platform with the Triumph Scrambler 400X and the Triumph Speed T4.

Design

The Speed 400 retains Triumph’s signature neo-retro styling, and has a premium paint finish. The overall look is heavily inspired by larger Triumph models, right down to the high-quality switchgear and components. Although the semi-digital console, which combines an analog tachometer and a small digital speedometer, could use some improvement, the bike maintains a stylish aesthetic. However, the placement of the digital speedo feels a bit cramped, and a full digital display might have been a better choice.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

The Speed 400 is powered by a liquid-cooled 398cc single-cylinder engine that produces 40PS and 37.5Nm of torque. Interestingly, this engine shares some design elements with the Bajaj Dominar, but it's tuned for a very different character. The Triumph engine delivers peak power at a lower RPM, making it quicker and more responsive at lower speeds compared to the Dominar.

The bike offers a strong mid-range performance, delivering 30Nm of torque as early as 3,000rpm, which makes overtaking in higher gears effortless. It's also quite easy to ride in the city, with its ability to cruise comfortably at low RPMs in 5th gear. On highways, the Speed 400 shines as well, maintaining a stable 120kmph cruise with minimal vibrations – although slight vibrations can be felt beyond 130-140kmph.

Handling & Ride Quality

One of the highlights of the Speed 400 is its suspension setup. While it offers a soft and comfortable ride over rough surfaces and speed breakers, it can decently manage corners. The bike is nimble, but it doesn’t offer the razor-sharp precision of something like the KTM 390 Duke.

The 17-inch wheels came equipped with W-rated Apollo H1 tyres in the 2024 version, they provided solid grip and inspired confidence, especially during cornering. While the Speed 400's 140-section rear tyre is narrower than the 150-section tyre on the Duke, it doesn’t significantly affect the bike's handling. The 2025 Speed 400 features Vredestein radial tyres, which we look forward to testing soon.

While the brakes aren’t bad, their feel could be more progressive. The initial bite feels spongy, and the stronger stopping power comes in a little later than expected.

Comfort

The Speed 400 is designed to offer a comfortable riding position, balancing between relaxed and sporty ergonomics. The 790mm seat height on the 2024 Speed 400 made it accessible for shorter riders, and despite its light weight, it feels stable even at higher speeds. The bike is easy to maneuver in traffic and parking spaces, adding to its daily practicality.

While the suspension does a great job on bad roads, it's worth noting that during hard cornering, the bike can feel slightly bouncy, though it remains confidence-inspiring overall.

Features

The Speed 400 doesn’t come loaded with the most advanced tech, but it gets a few essentials right. You get switchable traction control and a USB charging port. The 2025 Speed 400 also gets and thicker cushioning on the seats. What’s missing are modern features like smartphone connectivity, which would have been a welcome addition in this segment.

Should you buy

With a price of Rs 2.40 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Triumph Speed 400 offers great value, especially for those looking for a versatile and stylish bike that’s fun to ride in the city as well as on the highway. It's an excellent choice for new riders, thanks to its friendly power delivery and manageable weight, and it could also serve as a second bike for experienced riders looking for something lighter and more practical.
