Is Yamaha An Indian company?

Yamaha entered the Indian two-wheeler market in 1985, which was the time when most of the global players were making their foray into the country. Like other Japanese brands, Yamaha also partnered with an India-based company, Escorts Limited, thus creating a joint venture named Escorts Yamaha Motor Limited.

Under this new joint venture, Yamaha introduced two of its most popular two-stroke motorcycles in India – Yamaha RD 350 (which was launched here as Rajdoot 350) and RX100. Among these two motorcycles, the Yamaha RX100 became a roaring success, spawning newer two-stroke models like RXZ and RX 135.

With the growing popularity of four-stroke motorcycles in the late 1990s, Yamaha also shifted its focus from two-stroke RX motorcycles to four-stroke models by launching 110cc and 125cc motorcycles like Fazer, Crux, Libero, Enticer and Gladiator. In August 2001, Yamaha Motor Company Limited, Japan, became 100 per cent owner of the company, which was renamed to India Yamaha Motor Private Limited.

Yamaha made a grand comeback in the performance motorcycle market of India in 2008 with two all-new models in the 150cc category – YZF-R15 and FZ16. It was this time that Yamaha also became the first manufacturer in India to officially import and sell its global superbikes by launching the YZF-R1 and MT-01 in India.

In the following years, Yamaha gradually shifted its focus to making 110cc and 125cc scooters and 150cc motorcycles while occasionally launching its big-capacity motorcycles from its global portfolio through the CBU route.

Where Yamaha bikes are made in India?

Yamaha has two production facilities in India –  Surajpur (In Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh) and Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu), from where it manufactures motorcycles and scooters for the local and export markets. The Japanese brand has an expansive network of 2,200 customer touch points through its 500+ dealers.

Which Yamaha bike is best?

Yamaha bikes in India range from 150cc premium commuters to 320cc sportbikes. Following are some of the best Yamaha bikes in India:

Yamaha FZ-S Fi V4: One of the best premium commuters in India, the FZ-S is extremely popular thanks to its muscular design and super refined and frugal engine. It is best suited for urban riding.

Yamaha MT-15: Based on the venerable R15, this sporty street fighter features sharp styling, excellent handling and a powerful engine that has made it very popular among youngsters.

Yamaha YZF-R15 V4: The R15 brings all the thrills and sharp handling of a proper supersports bike in a small and manageable package. The perfect bike for someone starting their sports bike journey.

Yamaha YZF-R3: Powered by a 321cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, the R3 is the most premium bike Yamaha sells in India. But it’s pretty expensive since it comes to India as a CBU.

Is Yamaha a good scooter brand too?

While Yamaha sells only four different scooters in India, they’re all quite capable and well suited for the Indian market. Here are the best Yamaha scooters in India:

Yamaha Fascino 125 Fi: The Fascino has an elegant old-school designed coupled with an extremely smooth engine that delivers fantastic mileage. Plus it’s super comfortable, making it a great family scooter.

Yamaha RayZR 125 Fi: Basically, a Fascino 125 underneath, the RayZR offers sharper, sportier styling, making it a great choice for younger riders.

Yamaha Aerox 155: With the liquid-cooled 155cc engine from the R15, the Aerox is the most powerful scooter in the Indian market. Design-wise its a proper maxi scooter, making it really stand out on the road. Although expensive, the Aerox is the perfect scooter for those who want to make a statement.
