Is Yamaha An Indian company?
Yamaha entered the Indian two-wheeler market in 1985, which was the time when most of the global players were making their foray into the country. Like other Japanese brands, Yamaha also partnered with an India-based company, Escorts Limited, thus creating a joint venture named Escorts Yamaha Motor Limited.
Under this new joint venture, Yamaha introduced two of its most popular two-stroke motorcycles in India – Yamaha RD 350 (which was launched here as Rajdoot 350) and RX100. Among these two motorcycles, the Yamaha RX100 became a roaring success, spawning newer two-stroke models like RXZ and RX 135.
With the growing popularity of four-stroke motorcycles in the late 1990s, Yamaha also shifted its focus from two-stroke RX motorcycles to four-stroke models by launching 110cc and 125cc motorcycles like Fazer, Crux, Libero, Enticer and Gladiator. In August 2001, Yamaha Motor Company Limited, Japan, became 100 per cent owner of the company, which was renamed to India Yamaha Motor Private Limited.
Yamaha made a grand comeback in the performance motorcycle market of India in 2008 with two all-new models in the 150cc category – YZF-R15 and FZ16. It was this time that Yamaha also became the first manufacturer in India to officially import and sell its global superbikes by launching the YZF-R1 and MT-01 in India.
In the following years, Yamaha gradually shifted its focus to making 110cc and 125cc scooters and 150cc motorcycles while occasionally launching its big-capacity motorcycles from its global portfolio through the CBU route.
Where Yamaha bikes are made in India?
Yamaha has two production facilities in India – Surajpur (In Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh) and Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu), from where it manufactures motorcycles and scooters for the local and export markets. The Japanese brand has an expansive network of 2,200 customer touch points through its 500+ dealers.
