About Honda CB Shine SP

The BS6-compliant Honda SP 125 has been launched in India. It is the successor to the CB Shine SP and is available in two variants: disc and drum. The SP 125 pricing starts at Rs 72,900 (ex-showroom). With this, the new SP 125 is around Rs 7,321 more expensive than the drum CBS variant of CB Shine SP model. More details here.

The Honda CB Shine SP is one of the most premium 125cc motorcycles out there. Its 124.73cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine is not only peppy in urban conditions, but can deliver a phenomenal fuel efficiency of 61.32kmpl in the city! This motor pumps out 10.3PS of power and 10.3Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed transmission, unlike the CB Shine which comes with a 4-speed unit.

The Honda CB Shine SP’s primary rivals are the Hero Glamour FI and Bajaj Discover 125.

CB Shine SP Expert Review

BikeDekho Experts

Keeping it simple, the Honda CB Shine SP is a value for money motorcycle. Although a little pricey than the standard version, but certainly a worthy package to own. Considerable aesthetic upgrades, refined engine and addition of safety features make it standout in the commuter bike category.

Overview

With the aim to add excitement to its fleet of motorcycles in India and to the buying community of-course, Honda launched the CB Shine SP. Underpinning the same engine but with improved performance and fuel efficiency, it certainly supersedes the former. The fresh graphics adorned by the bike are pleasing to eyes. While its conservative looks make buyers drool over it again and again.

With CB Shine SP you can be sure of an effortless ride every time you twist the throttle. From Combi braking system to low rolling resistance HET tyres, this Honda bike has it all covered. The fuel economy of CB Shine SP, which is one of the prime factors for two-wheeler buyers in India, also doesn’t disappoint: 65Kmpl is a substantial number in this regard. No wonder city commuters like riding on this machine.

There are plenty of features that make this bike standout. Some of them are the integration of Eco-friendly Honda Eco Technology, AHO (automatic headlamp on) for safety and CBS (Combined Braking System) with equalizer. The suspension assembly comes with conventional telescopic forks at the front end and hydraulic spring shock absorbers at the rear that can soak up most of the road bumps quite easily.

Design

On the design front, you don’t find a radical difference from the host. The basic silhouette is same. However, there are tweaks across the fuel tank, fairing and tail panels. The bike is now more aggressive than ever. Contributing to its bold avatar is the larger and wider windscreen, trapezoidal headlamp that is raked out than usual. The new graphics on the fuel tank are striking while the mild contours that it gets are equally fascinating. The dual-tone treatment on the centre panel complements the overall appeal of the bike as it gets a fairly good ending with conventional tail lamp unit and turn indicators.

The freshness added to the bike is a step forward by the motorcycle manufacturer to adding spice to the lives of conventional buyers. However, despite several revisions and an aggressive appeal, the bike doesn’t leave its conservative essence, which is commendable. Honda CB Shine SP is a commuter motorcycle with a tinge of modernization.

Main design highlights of CB Shine SP are its multi-spoke alloy wheels, completely overhauled instrument console, rear suspension springs wrapped in red and the chrome heat shield over the muffler. The cluster is neatly laid out and is easy to read. The fuel gauge, odometer and the trip meter get a digital display while the speedometer still comes with an analogue display. Overall the fit and finish are up to the standards. The panel gaps are expertly placed and you won’t see a flaw from the naked eye.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

Under the skin, Honda CB Shine SP is powered by an air-cooled 4- stroke SI engine with a displacement of 124.73cc. The engine can put out a maximum power of 10.30PS at 7,500 rpm alongside a peak torque of 10.30Nm at 5,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. As soon as you start the engine and twist the throttle you can feel the typical Honda acceleration. The bike is smooth, sturdy and stable even at high speeds. With the existing setup, it can hit a top speed of 93kmph. Although the extra gear helps rider is achieving this feat time and again but significant vibrations can be felt through handlebars, which hopefully Honda would consider to improve in the near future. The engine is good enough to yield a fuel economy of 65Kmpl which is a considerable figure for commuter bikes.

Handling & Ride Quality

Ride quality is considered as one of the important factors for purchasing a commuter bike due to long commuting hours. Honda CB Shine SP performs exceptionally well on the road and not just urban roads but roads with undulations, bumps and obstacles of all sorts. The suspension assembly is absolutely superb that smoothens the route allowing the rider to feel fresh throughout the day despite spending a long time travelling from one location to another.

The Shine SP sports conventional telescopic fork suspension at the front and spring loaded hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. The low seating position and kerb weight allows the rider to manoeuvre the bike through traffic-ridden roads with aplomb. The bike comes with 18-inch rims and 80/100 tubeless tyres. Considering its braking setup, at the front, it comes with 130mm/240mm disc brake while at the rear it has 130mm drum brakes. Honda’s combined braking system with equalizer is present to offer a balanced ride throughout the commute.

Features

Honda CB Shine SP comes with few safety features that add a sense of safety to the rider and the pillion. There is AHO (Automatic Headlamp On) feature that ensures visibility does not get hampered even in adverse weather conditions. Plus, the presence of CBS with equalizer makes sure that the bike is stopped quickly and balance is maintained while braking.
