Ninja 400 Expert Review
Overview
April 4, 2018: Kawasaki has launched the Ninja 400 at Rs 4.69 lakh (ex-Delhi). It was first showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2018. Overseas it replaces the Ninja 300. The bike gets a larger capacity parallel twin motor, a new frame and new features. In India however, it will sell alongside the Kawasaki Ninja 300 which is priced at Rs 3.68 lakh (ex-Delhi). Styling is inspired by the Ninja H2 and ZX-10R. It is available in green paint option with KRT (Kawasaki Racing Team) livery.
Power comes from a new 399cc liquid-cooled parallel twin motor that makes 49PS at 10,000rpm and 38Nm at 8,000rpm. The new motor has been tuned to provide more low-end grunt as well. Its 6-speed gearbox comes with a slipper clutch. Handling upgrades comes in the form of a new steel trellis frame inspired by the Ninja H2. The new frame also helps keep the weight low at 173kg (kerb). It is lighter than the Ninja 300 by 12 kilos. Fuel tank capacity of 14 litres while ground clearance is 140mm. Suspension setup comes in the form of 41mm front telescopic forks and rear gas-charged and linked monoshock damper. Brakes are upgraded as well with a largest-in-class single 310mm front disc and a 220mm rear disc. ABS is standard.
The increased power output and new chassis should keep the Ninja 400 a step above its intended competition which comprises of the KTM RC 390, Benelli 302R and the Yamaha R3. The Ninja 400 should be a good alternative for someone looking for a small capacity, lightweight but more powerful bike.
