This list features bikes like KTM RC390, Ninja ZX-4R and more!
Gone are those days when one had to break the bank to explore sport biking at their best. Today, Indian buyers have plentiful choices in the sub-500cc motorcycle category. These new-age sports bikes offer world-class performance and features, making them accessible even to many first-time sports bike buyers. Following are the five most powerful fully-faired sports bikes in the sub-500cc category in India:
KTM RC 390
Price: Rs 3.18 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
The KTM RC 390 might be the only single-cylinder motorcycle here on this list, but when it comes to sheer performance, it can give some parallel-twin motorcycles a run for their money. The second-generation KTM RC 390 retained the single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 373.27cc engine which powered the previous-generation model. With 43.5PS @ 9000rpm and 37Nm @ 7000rpm on tap, the KTM RC 390 is one of the most powerful single-cylinder sub-500cc motorcycles in India.
The design of the new KTM RC 390 might be a ‘love-it-or-hate-it’ affair, but the motorcycle can bowl everyone over with its sharp riding dynamics. With this all-new generational update, the RC 390 also received a heavily tweaked chassis, taller clip-ons for a more comfortable riding posture and lighter wheels and brakes for reduced unsprung mass. It also feels more premium and value-for-money with additional features over its predecessor, such as a full-TFT instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity, quick-shifter, cornering ABS and traction control.
Yamaha R3
Price: Rs 4.65 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
Yamaha re-introduced the R3 in the Indian market after a long time, with the updated version getting a tweaked design and a few new features. However, Yamaha did shock the nation with the pricing of the new R3, for many believed that its asking price was too steep for what it offers.
Compared to the previous R3 sold in India, the new Yamaha R3 gets a new inverted fork, an updated front fairing with LED headlamps, all-LED turn indicators and a full-LCD instrument console. The Yamaha R3 also received a few tweaks to its liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, 321cc engine, which is now BS6 stage-II compliant. However, with similar performance numbers as before – 42PS @ 10750 rpm and 29.5 Nm @9000 rpm, along with a finely tuned chassis, the R3 continues to be the sweet, refined, tractable sports bike.
Kawasaki Ninja 400
Price: Rs 5.24 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
Like the Yamaha R3, the popularity of the Kawasaki Ninja 400 is also marred by its unjustifiable pricing, which again is quite steep for a sub-500cc sports bike. However, beyond its unreasonable asking price, the Ninja 400 tries to make a strong case for itself with its performance, making it one of the best motorcycles around its price point.
Globally, the Kawasaki Ninja 400 has replaced the ageing Ninja 300. However, in India, the Ninja 400 is sold beside the Ninja 300 as a more premium, larger and more powerful motorcycle. The liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, 399cc engine of the Ninja 400 is an upgrade in every sense over the Ninja 300’s engine. The higher performance numbers claimed by this engine – 45PS @ 10000 rpm and 37Nm @ 8000 rpm – match the sporty appearance of the motorcycle. The Kawasaki Ninja 400 has been on sale for quite a long time now, and that’s the reason it misses out on new-age riding aids and a fancier full-TFT instrument console.
Aprilia RS 457
Price: Rs 4.10 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
Compared to the over-priced Kawasaki Ninja 400 and Yamaha R3, their direct rival from Italy, the Aprilia RS 457 has dropped a lot of jaws with its relatively lower pricing. The reason is pretty clear – while the R3 and Ninja 400 come to India through the CBU route, the RS 457 is locally manufactured in India.
The Aprilia RS 457 is a giant leap for the Italian brand for many reasons, for it is made in India for the world. Apart from the performance numbers – 47.6PS @ 9400rpm and 43.5Nm @ 6700rpm – claimed by its liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, 457cc engine, the RS 457 further impresses with its best-in-class riding equipment package. The list includes ride-by-wire with three riding modes (eco, rain and sport), backlit switches, a full-TFT instrument console, traction control and an optional quick-shifter.
Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R
Price: Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
A niche motorcycle existing in its lone territory, the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R is a one-of-its-kind sports bike. A stark contrast to another sub-500cc sports bike from Kawasaki, the Ninja 400, the Ninja ZX-4R is the only sports bike in India to get an inline-four engine in the sub-500cc category.
The high-revving liquid-cooled, inline-four, 399cc engine of the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R, which claims 77PS @ 14500 rpm and 37.6Nm @ 12500 rpm, gives this exclusive motorcycle a character of its own. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R also has a track-oriented supersport chassis and suspension, four riding modes (Road, Rain, Sport and Rider), traction control and a quick-shifter, making it a sharp motorcycle. However, with such sophisticated hardware, the Ninja ZX-4R has also broken the record of being the most expensive sub-500cc sports bike on sale in India.
What Makes These Sub-500cc Motorcycles So Desirable?
All these five most powerful sub-500cc sports bikes sold in India have one thing in common – neither has compromised performance and quality for the price. Sportsbikes are at their best when they exude quality and premium appeal in how they look while offering thrilling power and the ability to ride fast on straight stretches and corners. And all these five motorcycles accomplish these feats effortlessly. You can check out these and other new and used bikes at BikeDekho!
