Overview

The Gladiator is back! This time with a different name - Yamaha SS 125. The stylish 125cc motorcycle was discontinued few years back but the manufacturer found it safe to relaunch it in the Indian market due to the well-flourishing 125cc segment of bikes. With its unveiling, the country gets another worthy machine that is capable of putting a smile on its owner’s face pretty easily. Like Gladiator, the vehicle is also expected to show some impressive figures on its sales graph.

The bike gets its power from a 123cc, air-cooled, four-stroke mill that generates a maximum power of 10.97bhp at 7,500rpm with a peak torque of 10.4Nm at 6,500rpm. The engine is mated to a five-speed transmission system that has an one-down and four-up gearshift pattern. Moreover, it has well-balanced gear ratios that does pure justice with the power delivery of this machine. Yamaha SS 125 runs on 2.75-18.4PR front and 3.00-18.6 rear tyres with stylish alloys. The suspension system of the bike has telescopic forks at the front and swingarm with spring loaded hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. The bike comes to a standstill with the help of a 240mm front disc brake and a 130mm rear drum brake.

Yamaha SS 125 is built on a diamond tubular type frame that gives it a strong skeletal structure. The front profile has a sharp headlamp with a black visor and clear lens turning indicators. The fuel tank shrouds enhances the overall body design by integrating to the neatly chiseled 13.6 liter fuel tank. Furthermore, the bike boasts a trendy rear end that looks fascinating with the sleek all-black exhaust. With body dimensions of 1995mm x 730mm x 1110mm (LxWxH), the bike presents itself as a handsome and good-looking 125cc player. It has a wheelbase of 1,295mm and a minimum ground clearance of 795mm that blesses the bike with good stability and handling characteristics. The total weight of the bike is 125kgs that avails an easy to ride benefit.

Design

Needless to say, Yamaha SS 125 is purely inspired from its elder sibling, Gladiator that disappeared few years back. Built on a diamond tubular type frame, the bike has a sharp headlamp section with a black coloured visor at the front that also holds the number plate. The fuel tank is crafted neatly and gives an upright riding position to the rider. The appeal is further enhanced by the integration of tank shrouds to it. Moreover, the company has also fitted a sporty engine cowl that gives a high-end feel.

Coming towards the rear, the bike receives an all-black muffler that matches well with the overall body design. A longer and well-cushioned seat gives enough comfort to the rider and pillion. The rear end gets a trapezoidal tail lamp design that incorporates clear lens turning blinkers as well. Yamaha SS 125 has body dimensions of 1,995mm x 730mm x 1,110mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase and minimum ground clearance of 1,295mm and 795mm respectively. With a 13.6 liter fuel tank in stock, the bike ensures a decent range without refuelling. The cockpit of the bike consists of an analogue speedometer, tachometer and fuel gauge.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

The air-cooled, SOHC, four-stroke engine has a displacement of 123cc and comes mated to a five-speed constant mesh gearbox. The motor generates a topmost power of 10.9bhp at 7,500rpm with maximum torque of 10.4Nm at 6,500rpm. With this, the bike touches a top speed mark of 105kmph and delivers a decent fuel economy. The company has provided an easy electric starter as well to increase convenience for the rider.

Handling & Ride Quality

Yamaha SS 125 is equipped with 2.75-18.4PR front and 3.00-18.6 rear grippy tyres. The suspension duties are carried out by telescopic forks at the front and swingarm with spring loaded hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. For better braking, the manufacturer has fitted a 240mm disc brake at the front wheel along with a 130mm rear drum brake.

Features

Yamaha SS 125 has a 240mm disc brake at the front wheel that ensures responsive braking. The powerful 12V-35/35W halogen headlight provides better visibility at night which is quite essential. Good stability and commendable ride quality is a yes with the stock tyres. The rear view mirrors are equipped for the rider to keep a check on its surrounding.

    best 125cc motorcycle
SS125 is the best bike in 125 cc segment. Its well-designed and Yamaha’s handling and performance is best in the world. I am Abhishek Goyal from Jaipur, Rajasthan. I purchased this machine 7 months ago and I have not faced a single problem with it till now. The motorcycle runs fast and certainly performs better than its competitor Bajaj Discover 125. The smooth riding bike engine exhibits a very good sound too. It gives a mileage of 55 to 60 kmpl in city and reaches upto 70 kmpl on highways. The bike is lightweight and its 5-speed transmission system makes it easy to steer through heavy traffic. The bike rides similar to TVS Apache RTR 160 of my friend. Apache is more powerful than my bike but SS125 provides better handling and comfort than Apache. It is the best offering in 125 cc segment presently available in the market. Its design can be improved to make it look more superior. Yamaha SS125 is priced at Rs. 60,000 (approximately) and can easily beat Bajaj Discover 125.

Best Bike in 125 cc Segment
Hi all, I got this bike type Rs on 21 June 2009 , By now I have completed more than 1,50,000 Kms by now and after some days i would be covering the equator thrice , just have changed its bore Piston @ 90,000 Kms. Its giving me an avg mileage of 65Kmpl (Highway) as I travel 100Kms Daily. It also performs well in hilly and kutcha roads as well.I had accidents thrice @ high speeds about 80km/hr. But Still it runs fine. Decent Price,Stunning Looks ,high Performance, Superb Mileage, Good Stability, Rough and tough, one more thing is that you can ride this bike on high gears which most bike lacks. One more thing is I always use Gulf 20W40, And always go for maintenance checks once in every 3000 Kms. Love your bike... I'm sure it will love you back.
