For the one who love to ride their bikes as a daily commuter, using a helmet is as necessary as any other accessory or part of a motorcycle. One can definitely ride without it but cannot be safe without it. The right helmet will save you from most of the extreme conditions in an effective manner and the wrong one will make you feel miserable on even a 10-minute ride. It is recommended that one should buy the helmet with utmost cares and should focus on some important factors. Here is a list of few important factors that can help you in picking up the right helmet for yourself.
1) Know your head size and shape:
Every individual has a different personality and body structure and it is important that one must be aware of the same. Majorly there are three categories, namely round oval, intermediate oval and long oval. Each individual can determine the same by observing the head structure by its own or can refer a friend for the same. If the helmet you are wearing is putting pressure on wrong points on your head, then certainly this is not the helmet which you should be wearing while riding. Therefore, always wear and determine where the helmet is putting pressure on your head. A right sized helmet will fit exactly like a crown, prevent large movements and will pull the skin of your face and scalp while removing.
2) Retention:
Helmets, which stay on your head in the worst conditions are considered the ones that will protect you, the rest are simply weights on your head. To check the same, fasten the strap of your helmet, try to pull it off from the back and see whether it rolls out of your head. If the helmet is rolling out, then adjust the strap and even after adjusting also if it is not staying where it is meant to be, then surely it is not the helmet for your ride. Retention is a basic problem of half faced and some of the modular helmets and one must always check the same before purchasing helmet.
3) Visor:
Visor is another crucial aspect of a helmet that must be considered while buying the desired helmet. The visor should be clear, as it plays a crucial role in giving you clear vision. Smoked and mercury tinted visors surely attracts the attention of the customers, but they put hindrance in providing a clear vision and must be avoided. For added budget, one may go for anti-fog and anti-scratch visor that will be again a wise decision to invest in.
4) Proper Cushioning:
Helmets are meant to protect your skull from damage in case of any crash or fatal conditions and the inner cushioning of the helmet plays a vital role in the same. One must ensure that the helmet has proper cushioning that can absorb the force in a significant manner and the inner surface is not flat otherwise it will not be able to provide you the kind of protection the helmet’s are meant to be.
5) ISI Mark:
There are many helmets available in the market and each manufacturer claims that their helmets will provide optimal protection to the riders, but an ISI (Indian Standards Institute) mark will ensure the same. An ISI logo on the helmet assures that the helmet complies with respective quality standards defined by the institution. However, an ISI mark helmet is little costly than the ordinary ones but, it is advised that one must go for ISI mark helmets in order to have proper protection while riding.
Despite of these certifications, one must consider all the above-mentioned factors in order to get the right helmet. The mark does not guarantee your safety but just defines the standard, it is the aforementioned factors the creates the major difference in ensuring the riders safety in an effective manner.
