Breaking: EV Giant Gogoro Opens Indian Innings With Zypp Electric
Showcases multiple e-scooter prototypes and its sophisticated battery swapping technology
Taiwanese electric-mobility marquee Gogoro has officially opened its Indian innings with a multifold business plan. Gogoro not only makes electric scooters but is also well known for its battery swapping technology, both of which it is introducing in India in phases.
In India Gogoro has partnered with Zypp Electric, a Gurgaon-based last-mile logistics company which deploys electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions. To begin with, both companies will run a pilot programme across Gurugram, Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Bengaluru. Gogoro officials say that the B2B 2 Series e-scooter will be almost as powerful as a conventional 110cc scooter, and operations should commence from Delhi starting December 2022.
Here’s what both brands are proposing: Over the course of the next two years Zypp will expand its fleet from 7,000 to two lakh e-scooters. It will also expand its network from six cities to 15 in the said period. Gogoro will be Zypp’s mobility partners and also create the charging infrastructure (swapping stations) required for this operation.
As for the charging stations itself– they are modular in nature and hence can be scaled according to the space available. In Taiwan, there are more Gogoro swapping stations than fuel stations, claims the brand. It also claims the average swapping time is about six seconds. impressive! Each unit draws power from the grid but can also self-sustain for up to 64 hours. Although a claim, this should be super useful in India as power outages are an inescapable problem in our country.
Furthermore, opening operations via the B2B method could give it a chance to properly test out its battery swapping technology with the help of this tailor made 2 Series e-scoot which varies from its international spec. In our opinion, this is a sustainable strategy for an international brand trying a new market like India. Here, all major teething issues can be addressed without hassling the customer. Gogoro will be able to apply the learnings from its B2B programme and apply it in its consumer e-scooters, which could be introduced in the future.
