The much-awaited Yamaha MT-15 has finally been spotted in India in its production-spec avatar. The upcoming motorcycle has been spotted on many occasions previously too and the latest spy shots confirm the changes (compared to the Indonesia-spec bike) seen on the test mule.
For starters, the India-spec Yamaha MT-15 has been equipped with a telescopic fork as seen on the Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 sold in India as opposed to the USD fork that the Indonesian bike gets. Another major change is the inclusion of a box-type swingarm as opposed to the cast aluminium unit found on the Indonesia-spec bike. Both these hardware changes have been made to keep costs in check and we expect the Yamaha MT-15 to be priced around Rs 1.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). In terms of competition, it will rival the likes of the KTM 125 Duke, Pulsar NS 200 and the TVS Apache RTR 200.
Cosmetically, the Yamaha MT-15 is similar to the one sold in Indonesia. The design highlight is the menacing projector headlight with LED DRLs. The India-spec MT-15, though, runs on redesigned wheels sourced from the R15 Version 3.0 sold in our market. The switchgear seems to be borrowed from the Yamaha FZ25 and the bike features an all-digital instrument console as seen on the R15. Other cosmetic changes include a saree guard and a tyre hugger to meet Indian regulations. The bike spotted in India has a matte blue shade and we are hoping the white and black colour options available in international markets are also offered here.
The Yamaha MT-15 will share its powerplant with the R15. The 155cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor churns out 19.3PS of power, and 14.7Nm of torque. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed gearbox with slipper clutch. Braking hardware consists of disc brakes on both ends and it’s highly likely that the MT-15 will get dual-channel ABS, something that the Indonesian-spec motorcycles misses out on.
