India Yamaha Motor denied media reports of its business partnership with Mahindra 2 Wheelers and announced that it is committed to the Indian market and plans to make investments in capacity expansion as well as new product development. India Yamaha Motor CEO & MD, Mr. Hiroyuki Suzuki said, “We are not looking for business partnership with any company. Our Mid-term plan is on track and we will be making sizeable investments for new product development, sales & service network strengthening and capacity expansion over the next few years.”
The company aims to sell 530,000 units (domestic and exports) this financial year, an increase of over 40 per cent over the 380,000 units sold in 2010. Moreover, during the Jan-Oct 2011 period, the company has recorded a growth of 68% within the 150cc segment (R15, FZ series, SZ series) in the domestic market. The fact that these bikes are gaining popularity in the tier II cities cannot be undermined as the regional market also plays a crucial role in driving both sales and demand for these bikes.
The company also recently launched the upgraded Yamaha YZF-R15 – a 150cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke fuel injected bike and it boasts of spruced-up looks and better performance in circuit riding. Yamaha made its initial foray into India in 1985. In August 2001, Yamaha India became a 100% subsidiary of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd, Japan (YMC). In 2008, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. entered into an agreement with YMC to become a joint-investor in the motorcycle manufacturing company "India Yamaha Motor Private Limited (IYM)".
IYM operates from its state-of-the-art manufacturing units at Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh & Faridabad in Haryana and produces motorcycles both for domestic & export markets. With a strong workforce of more than 2,000 employees, IYM is highly customer-driven and has a countrywide network of over 400 dealers. Presently, its product portfolio includes VMAX (1,679cc), MT01 (1,670cc), YZF-R1 (998cc), Yamaha FZ1 (998cc), Yamaha Fazer (153cc), FZ-S (153cc), FZ (153cc), SZ, SZ-X & SZ-R (153cc), YZF-R15 (150cc), SS125 (123cc), Yamaha YBR 125 (123cc), YBR 110 (106cc) and Crux (106cc).
