Following a soft launch in April this year, the new Indian Springfield is finally arriving at dealerships tomorrow
Introduced in March 2016, the new Indian Springfield made its on-paper entry in the Indian market with a soft launch in the very next month but the deliveries have not been started yet. Now, the company is bringing this new bagger to its dealerships in India tomorrow, i.e. November 17, 2016, for its official unveiling. The company has already announced the price of the bike during the soft launch and it comes with a sticker price tag of Rs 30.6 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Named after the birthplace of Indian Motorcycles, the Indian Springfield is based on the iconic Indian Chief’s platform. However, a few equipment and cycle parts have been changed. The steering geometry has also been updated with 25-degree rake and lesser 133mm trail to make it nimbler as compared to its siblings.
The bike shares most of the features with the top-end Chieftain model of the range, except the front batwing fairing and the infotainment system. Along with the shared features, the Springfield comes with some additional equipment as well, such as quick-release hard saddlebags and tyre-pressure monitoring. Due to the detachable bags, one can easily convert the bagger into a cruiser motorcycle.
Other standard features of the new Indian Springfield include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Cruise Control, keyless start and quick-release windshield. Moreover, the company offers additional accessories and equipment with the bike, such as Ape Hanger handlebar kit, performance kit and premium concert saddlebag audio kit.
Powering the Indian Springfield is the same Thunder Stroke 111 V-twin that is shared across the entire Indian Chief line-up and the Roadmaster. Mated to a 6-speed transmission, the massive 1,811cc, air-cooled motor delivers a peak torque output of 161.6Nm coming at just 3,000rpm.
Talking about the competition, the closest rival of the Indian Springfield is the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special that comes in an almost similar price range. The H-D bike has a slightly lower performance as compared to its Indian counterpart, however, it gets some extra features, such as a batwing fairing, infotainment system with USB port for iPod/iPhone, Boom! Box 6.5GT radio, 6.5-inch touchscreen display and 5.25-inch speakers.
