The Kinetic Luna, an iconic name from days past, is set to make a comeback in an electric avatar. And the launch may happen soon, as the company says that components like the chassis are already being constructed.

Those above a certain age (read- 80s kids) may remember the iconic “Chal Meri Luna” ad. With its 49cc two-stroke engine coupled with pedal power for when the fuel ran out, the Luna was an affordable, low-maintenance mode of transport for college students and young professionals. First launched in 1972, it stayed in production till the early 2000s, only being phased out due to tightening emissions norms.

Speaking now about the Kinetic Luna Electric (our guesstimate of what it may be called). It will likely be positioned as a low-cost electric scooter along the lines of the Hero Electric Optima, with a 45kmph top speed, and approximately 100km range. Besides, it may also find use for B-to-B applications, for the numerous food delivery and online shopping platforms, or as a last-mile mobility solution within large-scale business complexes.

The Luna’s rebirth in an electric avatar follows in the footsteps of another famous name, the Bajaj Chetak, and as such joins a list of revived names, such as the Jawa/Yezdi bikes and Vespa scooter.
