Expected to be launched in India soon
KTM has revealed the specifications for the much awaited 2025 KTM 390 SMC R, which is going to be the first sub-500cc supermoto in India. A supermoto is a bike that has grippy road tyres, long travel suspension and is lighter than most road bikes. A supermoto combines the usability, agility and the comfort of a dirt bike with the performance of a streetfighter thus being more fun to ride.
Design
The 390 SMC R features similar design as that of the 690 SMC R featuring a single piece flat seat with seat height of 860mm and gets a sleek and compact fuel tank with a capacity of 9 litres. The bike also gets aggressive styled body panels and all-LED lighting setup.
Engine and Performance
The 2025 KTM 390 SMC R will get the same 399cc single-cylinder liquid cooled engine from the Duke 390 producing 45PS and 39Nm and comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. This engine from the Duke 390 is already known for its maniac performance, and now that combined with a sleeker bike that is lighter by about 10 kgs than the Duke 390 would be more fun to ride.
Underpinnings
The bike has a steel trellis frame and a bolt-on aluminium sub-frame. This setup is also present on the 390 Duke and the bike feels quite rigid and agile on the move. So, the 390 SMC R being lighter will likely make it even more agile. The bike has a wheelbase of 1453mm that is 96mm more than that of the Duke 390. The bike gets a 43mm WP apex front fork with 230mm travel with adjustability and a separate WP Apex monoshock with 230mm travel and 20-clicks rebound adjustability. The KTM 390 SMC R gets more suspension travel than the Duke 390 without compromising the performance aspect, making it more rider friendly in day-to-day life.
Wheels and Brakes
The 2025 KTM 390 SMC R gets 17-inch spoked wheels wrapped in Michelin Power 6 tyres with a 110-section front and 150-section rear setup, same setup as that of the 390 Duke’s. The Michelin Power 6 tyres are known for their grip, control and durability and it's safe to say these will be confidence inspiring and fun to ride in the 390 SMC R. The braking duties will be performed by a 320mm radial disk at the front and 240mm disc at the rear with switchable ABS, same as that of the Duke 390. These brakes offer really great stopping power on the 390 Duke, so the braking setup is apt for some supermoto fun on the road.
Features
The 390 SMC R gets three riding modes: Rain, Street and Sport. The bike also has a 4.2 inch TFT display and gets bluetooth connectivity for navigation and other features.
The bike is not yet available in India for sale, but the bike was showcased at India Bike Week 2024. So, we are hoping that the 390 SMC R is launched in India by the end of March 2025 with a price point of about Rs 3.40 lakh (ex-showroom). The Indian two-wheeler market doesn’t have any supermoto bikes in the sub-500cc segment. Supermoto bikes in itself are a new concept in the country and if the 390 SMC R is launched here, it will help in introducing Indian customers to such bikes, similar to how the 1st generation KTM 390 Duke did for sub-500cc streetfighters back in the day. If KTM manages to give the SMC R a competitive price tag and decides to bring the bike here, then the next few months are surely going to be exciting for Indian motorcycle enthusiasts.
