Modified On Feb 3, 2024 07:09 PM By Irfan for Ather 450X

With edgy styling and agile handling, these are the five best scooters for college students

Gen-Z, characterised by a preference for attention-grabbing elements, seeks products that not only meet their requirements but also offer a sense of fun. This market trend has prompted two-wheeler brands to introduce scooters that excel in features, visual appeal, performance, and overall enjoyment of the riding experience. Asserting these qualities, the following are the current top five scooters highly favoured by college students in India:

1: TVS Ntorq 125

TVS redefined the sports scooter category by launching the Ntorq in 2018. It brought a lot of firsts for scooters in India, such as an engine kill switch and Bluetooth-enabled full-LCD instrument cluster along with near motorcycle-like handling. These features, along with its best-in-class three-valve, 124.8cc engine that produces 9.5PS @7000rpm power and a peak torque of 10.6Nm @5500rpm, make the TVS Ntorq 125 popular among college-goers. The Ntorq received more features and variants in the following years, with the current price ranging between Rs 84,636 and Rs 1,04,641 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

2: Yamaha Aerox 155

The Yamaha Aerox is a perfect balance between a scooter and a performance motorcycle, thanks to its edgy styling and central spine running through its floorboard. Along with the YZF-R15-derived liquid-cooled, 155cc engine that produces 15 PS @ 8000rpm power and a torque of 13.9 Nm @ 6500rpm. It has maxi-scooter-like styling, cavernous under-seat storage, and dual LED headlamps. It is available in four colour options. The Yamaha Aerox 155 price starts at Rs 1.46 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

3: Hero Xoom 110

For those college students who want a scooter high on style but has a low asking price, the Hero Xoom can be a good bet. The Hero Xoom 110cc scooter replaced the aging Maestro Edge and offers an edgier, more compact design. It has a 110.9cc engine, which churns out 8.16 PS @ 7250rpm power and has a peak torque of 8.7 Nm @ 5750rpm. It has new-age features like a full-LED headlamp and tail lamp along with a full-LCD instrument cluster. Hero has been offering the stylish-looking Xoom in three variants, with their prices ranging between Rs 71,484 and Rs 79,967 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

4: Ather 450X

The only electric scooter in this list, the Ather 450X, has been targeted more towards a younger audience instead of positioning it as a family-oriented scooter. Along with its sharp-looking body panels and sleek stance, the Ather 450X also impresses with its enticing performance, including its “Warp” riding mode and the full-TFT touchscreen instrument console. Ather has priced the 450X range between Rs 1.38 lakh and Rs 1.68 lakh (ex-showroom, Bengaluru), with the lineup including variants with 2.9kWh and 3.7kWh battery options claiming range up to 110 km/charge and a charging time of 5-5.5 Hrs.

5: Honda Dio 125

In 2023, Honda replaced the Grazia 125 with the Dio 125, which shares its rear profile, engine, fully digital instrument cluster and other mechanicals with the former. However, with a different-looking front end inspired by the more affordable 110cc Dio, the new Honda Dio 125 is an answer for those who always wished to have the edgy looks of the Dio but craved more performance. Powered by a 123.92cc engine, which belts out 8.3 PS @6250rpm power and a torque of 10.4 Nm @5000rpm, the Honda Dio is available in two variants – Standard at Rs 83,400 and H-Smart at Rs 91,300 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

What Type of Scooters Attract College Goers?

The general assumption among Indian parents is that scooters are slower, hence safer, compared to motorcycles, making scooters optimal for their kids. For college-going youth, a two-wheeler has to be high on style and features, with decent performance, to make sure they are not missing out much on the fun of riding a sporty commuter. Therefore, nowadays, most scooters have been upgraded with premium features like LED illumination, LCD instrument console, USB charging port, spacious underseat storage and Bluetooth connectivity. All such sporty scooters for college goers on sale in India are listed on BikeDekho, where you can select one depending on the performance and budget preferred.
