Yamaha’s sporty maxi-scooter and Honda’s off-road-themed maxi-scooter decoded in images

The 2020 Yamaha NMax 155 is one of the most feature-packed, performance-oriented 150-odd cc scooters in the Asian market. On the other hand, the Honda ADV 150 bears the distinction of being the only off-road-oriented maxi-scooter in the same category. The Yamaha NMax 155 costs IDR 33,750,000 (around Rs 1.64 lakh), whereas the Honda ADV 150 is priced at IDR 36.5 million (around Rs 1.77 lakh). Both prices on-road, Jakarta. We decode the nuances of the two scooters in detailed images:

While both the maxi-scooters are for enthusiasts, the Honda ADV looks a lot more aggressive thanks to its bigger 745cc X-ADV-derived design language. The Yamaha NMax sports a subtle look and reeks of European design genes.

The Yamaha NMax 155 as well as the Honda ADV 150 get an all-LED lighting system. However, Honda’s design looks a lot sharper.

The Yamaha NMax 155 features a fixed apron-mounted windscreen, whereas the windscreen on the Honda ADV 150 is a two-step adjustable unit, claimed to be the first in its class.

The two maxi-scooters sport a full-LCD instrument cluster loaded with features such as real-time and average mileage indicator and range, apart from the regular speedometer, tachometer, odometer and trip meter readings, fuel gauge, and clock. That said, the higher-end variant of the Yamaha NMax 155 sold in Indonesia gets smartphone connectivity to access features like phone call/message notification and parking location to name a few. Whereas, Honda’s console shows the ambient temperature to go with its off-road-friendly attitude.

Both scooters feature an apron-mounted storage compartment with an integrated USB charger. They also come with a Smart Key System, which is essentially keyless ignition.

The two scooters get a large contoured single-piece seat. The underseat storage in the NMax 155 is 23.5 litres, while Honda offers a generous 28 litres of underseat space in the ADV 150. Both scooters can accommodate a full-face helmet with ease.

The Yamaha NMax 155 is powered by the Yamaha R15 V3.0-derived 155cc single-cylinder VVA-equipped liquid-cooled motor, which develops 15.36PS at 8000rpm and 13.9Nm at 6500rpm. VVA technology (Variable Valve Actuation) helps in maintaining a balance between low-end grunt and top-end drive. On the other hand, the 150cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled fuel-injected motor in the Honda ADV 150 engine churns out 14.5PS at 8500rpm and 13.8Nm at 6500rpm. Both powerplants feature an idling stop-start system and a silent starter for quick and noiseless engine starts. More importantly, Yamaha’s engine is enhanced with traction control which is absent in the ADV 150.

The two scooters employ a telescopic front fork. In the Honda ADV, it holds a large 14-inch alloy wheel and a petal disc with single-channel ABS. The front wheel is wrapped with a 110-section block pattern tyre. The Yamaha NMax 155 uses a smaller 13-inch alloy wheel shod with a 110-section street tyre. It gets a conventional disc with dual-channel ABS.

Yamaha has equipped the NMax 155 with a pair of gas-charged 5-step preload-adjustable shock absorbers at the rear. The Honda ADV 150 gets the same setup but the shock absorbers are from Showa. The rear wheel in both the scooters is a 13-inch unit with a 130-section tyre (block pattern in the Honda and street tyre in the NMax 155).
