Yulu Launches Its First Personal Electric Scooter
You don't need a licence to ride this one!
Yulu has launched Wynn, its first personal electric scooter, at an introductory price of Rs 55,555 (ex-showroom) for a limited time, after which it will cost Rs 59,999. The Wynn can be booked online via the Yulu app for a token amount of Rs 999, with deliveries slated for mid-May. It is available in two colours: Scarlet Red and Moonlit White.
The Yulu Wynn looks barebones, with a slim design reminiscent of the Honda U-be. It gets 12-inch wheels front and rear, with drum brakes. It packs a 250W hub-mounted motor with a claimed top speed of 24.9kmph, and its 0.9kWh battery offers a claimed IDC (Indian Driving Cycle) range of 68km. Modest specs, overall, but there are a few things to remember.
Firstly, it’s aimed at riders 16 years old and above as a daily runabout courtesy its sub-25kmph top speed. Hence, it does not need a licence or registration. Secondly, its battery can be swapped at any battery swapping station on the Yuma Energy network, which currently number 100 (pan-india) though the brand claims this will grow to 500 by December 2023.
Besides, Yulu also gives a “battery subscription” option (similar to what we see with the Bounce Infinity E1) which it claims can bring down ownership costs by 40 percent. Also on offer are monthly subscription packs, based on kilometres covered, ranging between Rs 499 and Rs 899. Moreover, prospective customers can also buy the accessory portable charger, further reducing their dependence on swapping stations.
Moving now to features, it’s quite similar to its shared mobility counterparts. So there’s no physical key, with OTA access only via the Yulu app. That said, Yulu also offers remote vehicle access (via the app) which can be shared with others as well.
Deliveries for the Yulu Wynn will start first in Bengaluru, with other cities to be added soon. Prospective customers can log on to the website for test rides and other information. The Yulu Wynn goes up against other low-speed alternatives like the Hero Electric Eddy, Okinawa R30 and the Joy E-Bike Wolf.
Ultimately, though, while the Yulu Wynn looks funky, it will not be for a wide audience considering it's strictly a single-seater EV. And though Yulu offers accessories like a mobile phone holder, centre stand and rear carrier, it misses out on the capability of two-up riding as well as a usable underseat storage, available on conventional scooters like the Bounce Infinity E1.
