Overview

The 2017 Suzuki GSX-R1000 is available in two variants - standard and GSX-R1000R. The Suzuki GSX-R1000 has been priced at Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It will compete against the Yamaha R1, Honda CBR1000RR, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, Ducati 1299 Panigale, Aprilia RSV-4 and the BMW S1000RR. The Suzuki GSX-R1000R carries a price tag of Rs 22 lakh while the base version retails for Rs 19 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom, Delhi). Booking for both the motorcycles had already commenced for Rs 1 to Rs 3 lakh depending on the city. Powering the new motorcycle is a 999.8cc liquid-cooled, in-line four engine delivering 202PS of power and 117.6Nm of torque. This means that the new motor develops 17PS more power and torque has been hiked by a marginal 0.9Nm over its predecessor.

The new motorcycle gets Variable Valve Timing (VVT), which was developed for their MotoGP bike. The benefit of VVT is that it offers the rider good mid-range performance along with an extra zing in the top end of the power band. Another chink in the armour of the older bike was its lack of electronic wizardry. Suzuki engineers have loaded the new GSX-R1000R with three ride modes, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), 10-level traction control, cornering ABS while launch control and a bidirectional quickshifter (only the Suzuki GSXR-1000R gets the last three features). The R version rides on Show BFF (Balance Free Front) and the base version gets lower spec Showa BPF (Big Piston Front). The brakes are now larger 320mm dia twin Brembo disc brake at front and Nissin 220mm dia disc brake at the back.

Design

Suzuki GSX-R1000 is one of the most amazing motorcycles of its segment. The front profile of the bike comes with a elegant and sharp headlamp which is mounted between the air vents. The clear lens turn blinkers incorporated with the rear view mirrors that strongly display the creativity of the manufacturer. The full front fairing wraps the bike neatly in a supersport costume with GSX-R printed on either side. The aggressive and huge fuel tank assist riding posture besides improving the appearance.

The company furnished it with a well-cushioned, sporty split seat and an aggressive 4-2-1 exhaust system which matches well with the tough character of the bike. It comes with an overall dimensions of 2045 mm in length, 705 mm in width, 1130 mm in height along with a wheelbase of 1405 mm. Its ground clearance sits at 130 mm. The bike has a huge and neatly chiseled fuel tank with a store capacity of 17.5 liters. The instrument cluster comprise of a digital speedometer, fuel gauge, twin tripmeters, selected driving mode and an analogue tachometer.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

The manufacturer configured it with a powerful 999cc, four-stroke, four-cylinder, fuel injected, DOHC engine that pumps out a maximum power of 160 bhp at 9500 RPM with a peak torque of 110 Nm at 8000 RPM. Apart from this, it comes with a six-speed constant mesh transmission set-up which is mated to a wet multiplate clutch assembly. The transistorized electronic ignition aided mill has a compression ratio of 12.9:1 with a bore x stroke ratio of 74.5mm x 57.3mm. With this arrangement, bike can sprint the top speed of 292 kmph.

Handling & Ride Quality

The bike is furnished with one of the best parts from around the world to provide a top notch braking experience and ride quality. Its suspension system equipped with inverted telescopic coil spring shock absorbers at the front and link type, coil spring monoshock at the rear works very well in both bumpy and rough surface. Apart from this, it is bestowed with a 310mm dual disc brakes at the front and 220mm single disc brake at the rear along with Brembo monobloc callipers and ABS unit, that offers brutal stopping power and high precision braking with superb stability. It runs on 120/70 ZR17 front and 190/50 ZR17 rear tubeless tyres that come fitted over tough black alloy wheels.

Features

The manufacturer offers it with an advanced electronically controlled steering damper which provides lighter steering at low speeds and more damping force at racetrack and high speeds. Besides this, it is equipped to a slipper clutch, which helps the bike not to lose the revs in case of sudden downshifts. The Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) consists of three different modes of riding to adjust the power according to the requirement of rider. The three modes are named as A, B and C, which are set in a decreasing order of throttle response. These handful of features make the bike one of the most fun-filled yet safe liter-class motorcycles on the planet.
