Scrambler 800 Expert Review
Overview
Ducati has launched the 2019 Scrambler Cafe Racer, Scrambler Full Throttle and Scrambler Desert Sled. The Scrambler Icon was updated a while back and gets cosmetic updates and features like cornering ABS from the larger Scrambler 1100.
Preceded with plenty of hype by the Italian motorcycle manufacturer, Ducati took the wraps off the much-awaited Scrambler for the first time at the Intermot 2014 motor show in Cologne, Germany. Certainly living up to that hype, the motorbike reminds of the 1960-70’s vintages and is styled as a “retro” bike.
The first generation of Scrambler was powered by single-cylinder engines with several displacements. Now, the Scrambler runs on a fuel-injected, oil and air-cooled, 803cc L-Twin engine with two-valves per cylinder that produces a maximum power of 75hp with 68Nm of torque. The motor is linked to a six-speed transmission that chain-drives a 17-inch rear wheel. The top speed of the beast remains a mystery. The Scrambler Ducati sports a fuel tank of 13.5 liter capacity. The stopping responsibility is handled by a 330mm, four-piston calliper front disc and a 245mm rear disc with combined ABS. The comfort area is managed by upside-down Kayaba 41mm fork at the front and Kayaba rear monoshock with preload adjustment.
The fleet comes with six variants- Icon, Urban Enduro, Classic, Full Throttle, Desert Sled and Cafe Racer. Each version is designed to meet a particular style stature engrossed with adventure and a strong off-roading image. A comfortable riding position with wide handlebars adds to the main positives of the bike. The tyres come under Pirelli brand with a standard size of 110/80 ZR18 at the front and 180/55 ZR17 at the rear. Each Scrambler is different from its sibling in one way or the other. The Icon believes in simplicity and is the most basic of all. While the Urban Enduro and Classic variants are incorporated with spoke aluminium wheels, the Full-throttle variant comes with a short sporty front mudguard and an all-black fuel tank with yellow stripes.
Other standard fittings include the two-channel ABS braking, fully modern LED-powered headlights, an old-school tapered petrol tank and a fuel cap inscribed with the words "Born in 1962." Under the seat, the storage bin features a USB charging port, that was missing in the old Scramblers. A sporty LED tail lamp that is incorporated neatly just below the saddle looks impressive. A steel tank with interchangeable aluminium side panels does add a lot to its vintage character. Scrambler Ducati can prove its worth by snatching the market share of its competitors. The Indian buyers will have to pay Rs. 7-10 lacs who wish to park this Italian monster in their garage.
Design
All the four models of Scrambler series are assembled on Tubular steel Trellis frame that is highly durable and rigid. The machines are said to be the contemporary interpretation of the iconic Ducati model, i.e., the bikes are designed in the same form in which the old runners were offered. The suspension system of the bikes includes upside-down Kayaba 41mm forks at the front and Kayaba rear shock at the rear which is pre-load adjustable. The tyres equipped to the motorcycles are Pirelli MT 60 RS 110/80 ZR18 at the front and Pirelli MT 60 RS 180/55 ZR17 at the rear. Scrambler Classic and Urban Enduro sport spoke aluminum wheels, while the other two models are come with 10-spoke light alloy wheels. The manufacturer has kept Anti-lock braking system as a standard option that works with 330mm disc with radial 4-piston caliper at the front and 245 mm disc with single piston floating caliper at the rear.
The Scrambler series are designed to cater masses with its affordable price tag and competitive performance. Icon is a basic model upon which all the other models have taken their final avatars. Urban Enduro is transformed into an adventure motorcycle with off road handlebar with cross bar, round headlight with LED ring, headlight grill and Skid Plate. Classic brings back the memories of 1970’s where attention to details was the true mantra of success. Full Throttle version is designed for the flat track world riders can try their luck in dirt ovals. It is also bestowed with lower flat track inspired handlebar.
Icon is available in two shades: Yellow and Red. Urban Enduro is offered in Wild Green color. Orange Sunshine shade is the color of Classic and Full Throttle version gets Deep Black color with Yellow stripes.
Engine, Mileage & Performance
Ducati has employed an 803cc, 2-valves per cylinder, air-cooled, Desmodromic distribution, L-Twin engine in all the four Scramblers. The motor is connected to 6-speed gearbox that works with an APTC (Adler Power Torque slipper clutch) having wet multiplate with mechanical control. The engine is configured to generate a maximum power of 75hp at 8,250rpm and a peak torque of 68Nm at 5,750rpm. It also gets electronic fuel injection that improves power delivery and fuel efficiency. The fuel tank capacity of the machine is 13.5 liter.
Handling & Ride Quality
Ducati Scrambler series are designed to rule the roads, the machines are fitted with high quality equipments that make it extremely durable and reliable. The braking of the machines is responsive as ABS has been kept standard. Besides, disc brakes at both ends work just fine for the rider to take control of the situations. The handling of the bikes is much pleasant as these machines have wide rear tyres and sound suspensions to count on.
Features
Ducati Scrambler series is loaded with fat tyres, under seat USB port for mobile charging, Anti-lock braking system and disc brakes, which makes it highly safe for the riders.
