The bike now comes with MotoGP inspired carbon-fibre winglets, a completely new design, and a whole lot more

Yamaha R1 and R1M Launched internationally

Yamaha has launched the 2025 Yamaha R1 and R1M globally. The bike now comes with a bunch of different changes to its design and underpinnings. The Japanese manufacturer is offering this litre-class bike as a road legal model in the USA, whereas in Europe it is offered as a track bike.

In the USA, the new R1 is priced from  USD18,999, which comes to around Rs 15,88,855. The R1M starts at a higher price of USD 27,699 (ex-showroom) or Rs 23,16,490. All prices without duties and taxes. In this article we will be going over what the bike has to offer and also answering the question, will it come to India?

What is new?

The R1 has undergone a couple of design changes. The first is the addition of new MotoGP inspired winglets that make the bike look a lot sportier and more aggressive.

Along with this, the bike’s underpinnings have also been revised. The R1 now gets a fully-adjustable KYB fork and monoshock. The braking setup has also been updated with new Brembo Stylema monobloc brake callipers, paired with a new Brembo master cylinder, which should offer improved braking performance.

Lastly, the bike has been updated with new seat material which Yamaha claims will improve both rider and pillion comfort, while also facilitating better ease of movement.

Coming to the R1M, Yamaha hasn’t made many changes to the bike. The only thing that is new is the addition of the MotoGP inspired carbon fibre finished winglets and the seat material. Other than this, the R1M is the same bike as the previous generation R1M.

What Remains Unchanged?

The Yamaha R1 and R1M are still powered by the same 998cc, liquid-cooled inline 4 cylinder engine which outputs 200PS and 113Nm. Both the bikes are built on the same perimeter frame and feature similar suspension and braking setups.

The R1M being the more performance-oriented bike, gets an advanced 43mm Öhlins electronic NPX fork and a fully-adjustable Öhlins electronic monoshock.

R1 and R1M console

Both bikes get a similar 4.3-inch TFT console, which displays essential information such as speed, tachometer readouts, fuel level along with trip and odometer readouts. Both the R1 and R1M get a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) which controls electronic riding aids such as cornering traction control, 4-level cornering ABS, a 4-level wheelie control, a 3-level launch control system, among others.

Will The R1 Be Launched In India?

The new Yamaha R1 is street legal in the USA, since it complies with their emissions norms. However, the European Union has more stringent EURO5+ emissions norms. Therefore, it’s launched only as a track bike in European countries.

Yamaha R1 and R1M coming to India?

Indian BS6.2 norms are more stringent than the European norms, and thus, the new R1 won’t be launched here. That is, unless Yamaha makes some comprehensive changes to the engine internals, which is very unlikely.

Currently the market is too small and sales will be quite low. So it doesn’t make much financial sense for Yamaha. That said, Yamaha could bring the bike as a track-only bike they have done in Europe.
