Does Ather’s New Trademark Application Mean A More Affordable E-scooter Is Incoming?
The upcoming Ather 450S will not be a new affordable electric scooter and here's why
Ather has filed for a trademark of the word ‘450S’. And what we think this could be, is rebranding. It makes sense for Ather to name the recently-launched base variant Ather 450X as the Ather 450S, and name the top-spec Pro Package trim as the 450X. This not only meets the S and X naming hierarchy but also avoids confusion as both the trims were earlier called the 450X but with or without the Pro Pack.
Contrary to online reports, this won’t be an even more affordable variant of the scooter. The brand already has the base 450X for that and going further down the price chain isn’t something Ather’s boss Tarun Mehta is aiming for (as said by him). And in an effort to make it cost effective, going down in range will also not make sense, meaning the cost-cutting will have to come from the batteries. Other speculation is that the 450S will slot above the 450X, but then the naming wouldn’t make sense. An S typically always slots under an X.

Could this slot between the base and the Pro Package 450X, perhaps with a faster charger and three basic riding modes? It might sound plausible but the price difference between the two is a bit too small for Ather to play around with the difference. All in all, we think this trademark is all about Ather renaming its scooters. Only time will tell what exactly it is though, so stay tuned to BikeDekho!
