EXCLUSIVE: SYM Joymax Z 300 Maxi-Scooter Spied

The 300cc maxi-scooter was spotted doing triple-digit speeds in Pune

• The SYM Joymax Z 300 uses a 278.3cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled motor.
• It produces 27.3PS and 27.3Nm.
• Expect the brand to enter India either via Mahindra or with Kinetic MotoRoyale.

The SYM Joymax Z 300 maxi-scooter was recently spotted in Pune by one of our colleagues. The scooter was seen doing around 120kmph, which affirms the possibility of it being a 300cc scooter and not a 125cc or a 250cc version of the Joymax, all of which look identical.

The badging was hidden but the scooter looked pretty much production-ready. The 300cc maxi-scooter looks quite imposing for a scooter with a large adjustable windscreen, bulbous apron with an integrated headlamp and indicators, contoured seat, and a lengthy exhaust system. Its underseat storage is large enough to accommodate two full-face helmets. It also gets an apron-mounted compartment with a USB charging port. It uses a twin-pod analogue instrument cluster with a digital inset in the middle, which shows details like coolant temperature, fuel gauge, clock, and odometer readings.

The scooter is powered by a 278.3cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, churning out 27.3PS at 8000rpm and 27.3Nm at 6,750rpm. The engine works alongside a CVT transmission. Underpinnings include a telescopic front fork, twin rear shock absorbers, 260mm front and 240mm rear petal disc brakes with dual-channel ABS as standard.

Taiwanese two-wheeler brand, SYM, used to be Kinetic’s India partner in the early 2000s. In 2008, Mahindra & Mahindra acquired an 80 percent stake in Kinetic Motor Cycles Limited. Then, in 2016, Kinetic formed a multi-brand venture, called MotoRoyale, which dealt with premium and niche bike manufacturers such as MV Agusta and Norton, and later in 2018, with Hyosung, SWM and FB Mondial as well. However, due to various factors such as the new BS6 emission norms and the internal restructuring of some of these brands, MotoRoyale has no products to sell at the moment. So, MotoRoyale could be revived with its possible reunion with SYM or perhaps Mahindra might look to expand its two-wheeler business beyond the Mojo 300 in India. 

Either way, it will cater to the premium scooter segment with offerings such as the upcoming Honda Forza 350. If we’re being optimistic, we could expect the SYM Joymax Z 300 to enter our shores in mid-2021 with possible pricing of around Rs 3 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh (ex-showroom). Fingers crossed until then.
